“Over here, Blake.”

He surged ahead and burst into the clearing just as someone shoved her aside and dove into the underbrush.

Uncertainty ripped through him. Go after the man, or check on Christine? He glanced at where she lay crumpled on the ground, blood dripping from her neck. All thought of pursuit vanished as he rushed to her side.

“Chris, talk to me, honey.” He lifted her gently into his arms and helped her to the bench. She was shaking so badly that he wrapped his arms around her and held her tight. “What did he do?” he whispered as he tried to look at her neck.

She shook her head and burrowed into his arms. “It’s okay,” she managed. “He only nicked me.” Her breath huffed. “Because of you. You saved me. Again.”

Blake drew her more snuggly against him.

“I tried to be brave. I tried to pretend I was you.”

His heart broke a little at her words knowing if he’d been doing his job properly, she wouldn’t have had to pretend. “Can you tell me what happened?”

He felt her nod. “I got a note telling me to meet you in the garden. I knew you didn’t send it, but I figured Melinda had, that she was trying to set us up.”

Blake choked out a laugh. “I had the same thought.”

She pulled back a little and looked up at him. He thought he could drown in those eyes, emerald pools spilling over with tears.

“And yet we both went.” She braved a smile. “I survived because I trusted you. It was dark in the garden. I knew you wouldn’t ask me to meet you in a place I felt unsafe.”
