ABOUT THE BOOK

People can’t be trusted.

Animals always made more sense than humans did to marine biologist Skye Youngblood. After her mother’s suicide, she left Alabama and never looked back. These days, she pours her heart into protecting nature’s sea creatures. When she returns to Dauphin Island, Alabama, for a temporary manatee migration study, her dark past is much too close. She can’t let her guard down. But how can she keep her heart hidden when a kind man with a genuine smile makes her want a fresh start?

Charter fishing pays the bills for widower Pete Thompson and his little girl, but like his father, a pastor, Pete can’t help but fish for men. Only, after growing up under constant scrutiny as a preacher’s kid, Pete’s ways are a bit more unconventional. And the bulk of his life revolves around raising his precious daughter.

When he witnesses the car wreck of a new marine biologist on the island, it doesn’t take a genius to see that more than just her physical pain needs tending. Pete feels called to help Skye find true healing, but he’s navigating dangerous waters. And he’s not at all sure he’ll walk away unscathed.

EXCERPT

This couldn’t be happening. According to his instruments, he’d almost caught up to the other boat. To Skye. The tornado hit the water and formed a waterspout. It lifted and spun The Sea of Grace, then dropped it back down hard on its side. Pete’s hands slipped from the steering wheel. His body slammed hard into what felt like solid iron. Pain shot through his side. Water filled the boat around him, and he fought to find his way upright. He had to get out!

As the darkness and murky water closed over him, panic exploded in his chest. He ran his fingers along the edges of the wall trying to gain a reference point. His right arm throbbed with each movement. He had to break free and find the surface. Come on!

At last, he felt an opening, tugged himself closer to it with his left arm, and swam out.

When he popped up to the surface, his lungs burned. Eight-foot swells dipped him up and down, angry waves crashing over him. He had to keep his head up. Not drink too much sea water. Get his bearings.

Find Skye.

The wind still blasted. The salty spray filled his nose and mouth. Groaning against the pain in his arm and chest, he treaded water, searching for any sign of life. Had she gone into the water too?

“Skye? Can you hear me?”
