Foolish woman. Abigail remained by the fireplace in the parlor, eyes slid closed in humiliation for the hundredth time since Garrett Barringer’s departure. She had stood on the threshold of spending time alone with the man. On the day before her departure, no less. An opportunity she never believed would have occurred.

Why then had she ruined her chances by blurting out most of her faults within the span of not even a full minute’s time? Faults he may not have even realized. Speaking liberally as if she were eager for his forgiveness. His approval.

Why had she not stayed upstairs instead of running back down, desperate to see him? Because she was eager to be near the man. More eager than even she had realized.
