Eleanor kept to the edges of the church building to avoid getting trapped within the knots of people as they spilled into the fresh spring air. She hated the pitying looks, the suspicion, even the disgust, but not enough to avoid the house of God. Only a few more steps and she could escape to the boarding house.

A hand grabbed her elbow. She spun to slap the offender, only for the strike to be blocked by a feminine glove. Breath rushed out of Eleanor. “Mrs. Ward, you startled me.”

“I’m sorry for that.” Cora Ward wrapped Eleanor’s hand around her arm, her black ringlets bouncing about her tanned face as she led them toward the exit. “I know how much you dislike being singled out, but I need you to accompany Silas and me back to Crooked Tooth.”

Fragile hope squeezed her chest. “You found something.”

Cora pressed her lips together, blue eyes dancing.

“You found him.”
