“I don’t think so. I don’t even know if the shop will be closed. If it is, maybe I can convince her to take the train up for the day.”
“See if you can.” David’s sigh came over the line loud and clear. “If I try, she’ll say no immediately. But if you do ...”
“I’ll do my best,” Kyle promised. “But I’ll be honest—”
“You’ll do what’s in Sam’s best interests, not mine. Even though I’m covering your hotel room.”
“Yes, sir.”
Kyle could imagine David clapping him on the shoulder, his eyes lit with that friendly smile. “That’s exactly why you’re the right man for the job. And why I’ll keep asking you whether you’ll ever call me something other than your boss.”
With David’s vote of confidence lifting him, Kyle made his way to the teahouse. He and Sam had fallen into a rhythm over the past week. It was comfortable, friendly, but not Kyle’s ultimate goal.
Perhaps that was why he’d been considering asking David to take him off the payroll. Kyle didn’t want Sam to think he escorted her to dinner every night because her brother asked him to. Worse, paid him to. Kyle wanted her to know it was because he wanted a future with her. Her brother simply provided the funds to allow him to keep her safe. One day, perhaps working for her brother would provide for a home.
