He bit off the rest of his words, going perfectly still except for a few shallow breaths. I’d heard something beneath his voice—a whimper or groan—and I waited, listening.
A feminine moan, barely louder than the wind stirring the leaves in the trees, came from inside the house.
Jordan stood, eyes locked on the left side of the porch. “Gavin lives with his grandmother.”
“That wasn’t a normal moan. Something’s wrong. She could be hurt.” I reached past him to twist the knob, but it was locked.
“I’ll call it in. Stay here while I try to find a way in.” Jordan pulled out his phone to dial 9-1-1 as he bounded down the porch steps and jogged around the house.
I surveyed the mounds of junk to the left and right of the door. There had to be a window I could get through to help the old woman while we waited for the ambulance.
Grabbing the porch railing for stability, I stepped into the sea of debris. I stumbled and sank into the mess, objects I couldn’t see grabbing at my legs. Something sliced at my ankle, but my jeans took the brunt of it. I fumbled my way to a window, half sinking and half surfing on the mounds of junk.
All but one third of the window was blocked from the inside. Somehow that didn’t surprise me. Random objects dug into my knees and shins as I strained upward to see through the sliver of unobstructed glass.
Shadowy towers filled the interior, like buildings zigzagging against the night sky. In the left corner, a figure sprawled on the floor in the glow of an outlet nightlight.

Jesus and laughter have brought C.C. Warrens through some very difficult times in life, and she weaves both into every story she writes, creating a world of breath-stealing intensity, laugh-out-loud humor, and a sparkle of hope.
