“Thanks.” Monty stood, grabbing her purse and unfinished cookie. Perfect excuse to leave the room while she was ahead. She glanced at the shorter woman as she reached the hallway. “Who is it?”
“He wouldn’t give a name. Normally, I wouldn’t send it through, but he said he was calling with information about the Weston malpractice suit.”
“Okay, thanks.” Monty headed up the wide, ornately carved wooden staircase. “I’ll take it in my office.” She hoofed it up to the landing in the corner, then turned left and climbed the long set of stairs that took her to the second floor.
Hurrying through the carpeted hallway, she darted into her office and plopped her purse on the desk as she grabbed the landline phone receiver. “This is Monty Montgomery. With whom am I speaking?” She tried to hold her quickened breath to keep from panting into the phone.
But the person on the other end of the line apparently didn’t mind that. All he or she did was breathe. Heavily.
A shiver snaked up Monty’s spine. “Hello? Who is this?”
More ominous breaths.
Should she hang up? Her fingers gripped the receiver tighter.
“Taking Weston’s side would be dangerous. Deadly for you.”
