EXCERPT
Sabriel straightened the papers, sweat slipping down her shoulder blades. Footsteps echoed in the hall.
Hang it all. Dashing for the door, she peeked around the corner. Strands of red hair covered her eyes, but she pushed them away.
Nothing.
With one final glance over her shoulder, she slipped outside. The hall remained deserted, but the footsteps remained around the corner from the stairwell. The door to Milosh’s rooms clicked shut behind her.
Fear pressed in her gut.
A hand closed around her mouth.
“What th—” Sabriel whirled around, kicking her captor in the groin. He groaned, doubling over.
She drew the dagger from beneath her dress, her weapon colliding with his sword. Jumping to his feet, he knocked her hand back, twisting her wrist. She cried out as pain shot up her arm. The dagger clattered to the ground.
She shoved her opponent back, trying to reach for the weapon. Her hand closed around empty air as he kicked her back down. Cold metal touched under the soft flesh of her chin. She briefly closed her eyes, drawing in a sharp breath.
“I see your pretty neck is in trouble.”
Sabriel’s eyes flew open, meeting the smirk of someone she had once hoped to never see again. “You.”
