EXCERPT

As they approached the white timber house, Andrew wiped the sweat from his palms onto his denim jeans. It had been a while since he had to do this, and his sometimes-introverted personality didn’t like it. Boyup had a small population of seventeen hundred people, and most people he’d known for decades. What had brought this family to town? Perhaps, the man of the house had a fly-in fly-out job and wanted to enjoy the country life in between shifts.

Simon stepped forward, rapped on the door, and stood by his father.

A muffled yap of a small dog came from the other side, followed by a feminine voice. “Boomer. Sit. Stop it. Stop licking my feet.” A delightful laugh came next.

Andrew grinned at his son. “Sounds like we have friendly neighbors.”

The weathered door creaked open to reveal a beautiful blond with enticing blue eyes. Andrew blinked twice. “It’s you?” His mouth went dry. “I mean, I know you. Well, actually we haven’t met . . . but…”

A glossy white smile calmed his nerves. “Yes, I saw you on stage at church. I loved the song choices,” she said with an American accent.

“Thank you.” He cleared his throat, ignoring the laser stare coming from Simon.

The woman glanced at the basket of goodies.

“Oh.” He raised the gift. “This is for your family to say welcome to the neighborhood. We live at the orchard down the road.” He used his free hand to pat his chest. “I’m Andrew, and this is my son, Simon.”

She shook Simon’s hand. “I’m Chantelle. Nice to meet you both.” Then she took the basket. “Mmm. Looks delicious. This is so nice of you.”

He sighed in relief. “You probably need two baskets with your large family, but you know where to get more.”

She raised a neatly shaped eyebrow. “I have a thirteen-year-old growing boy, but he’s in Darwin for another week. I love fruit, so hopefully, there will be some left when he gets back.”

What about all the children running around on Saturday? He wanted to ask, but it would be rude to pry into her personal details on a first meeting.

“I can bring more around next week, for your son . . . and husband. He doesn’t have to fly to America for his work, does he?” What happened to resisting personal questions.

Simon scuffed his boot. Was he hinting to get out of here?

“He passed away in the States, and I left Nebraska shortly after. It’s just Noah and me now. My daughters are all grown up. You must’ve seen my grandchildren running around on the weekend. They’re always making a ruckus.” Her grin was easy.

But Andrew’s face heated. “Sorry about your loss.”

“It’s been over a decade now,” she said matter of fact.

He lowered his voice along with a slight dip of his head. “So, does it get easier as time goes on?”

“Dad.” Simon hissed beside him.

Her face paled from its creamy white texture. “I believe it can.”
