ABOUT THE BOOK

Years ago, a Dear John letter and then an IED explosion overseas rocked Davis Donnelly’s world and left him unclear about his marital status. He’d signed divorce papers, but broken mentally and physically, he’d never bothered to find out if his marriage actually ended. Now that he’s about to start a new position as an outreach minister, it’s time to settle things once and for all. At the moment he tracks down his wife—or former wife?—she takes a tumble while chasing a little boy. Her son. And that’s when life flips upside down.

Joy Jennings Donnelly made her share of mistakes. But one thing she never considered a mistake was her child, and she’ll do anything to protect him. Even keep his paternity a secret.

When she’s suddenly injured with not a soul to help her or her son, Joy is forced to rely on the man who has the most reasons to hate her.

EXCERPT

This had to be a really bad dream.

Joy gritted her teeth against the agony throbbing up her leg. Never in a hundred years, or even a thousand nightmares, had Joy expected to see Davis Donnelly standing at her apartment complex holding her son. Especially a naked-as-a-jaybird Hankie, writhing like a greased piglet.

It’d be a little humorous if she weren’t lying on the ground, pain knifing her ankle, waiting on Davis to find her phone and the keys to her Highlander so they could leave for the hospital. One look at the man’s old Jeep and she’d known they’d have to take her car. It was a wonder the ragged thing ran at all.

She’d rather someone else take her—almost anyone else—but she’d already texted the neighbors she knew when she was looking for a babysitter. Surely one of her friends could help once she made it to the hospital.

What in the blazes was Davis doing in Atlanta anyway? Last time she’d searched him online, her husband was living in St. Simons. Yeah, a little close for comfort, being in the same state, but Atlanta was a world of its own. A person could disappear inside the big city, especially if she stayed off social media. People at work knew better than to try to take a picture of her or Hankie. She’d used the pretense of having a violent stalker at her last hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Sort of true-ish.

Okay, maybe not true. But she sure didn’t want Doctor Lying-Cheating-Scumbag to know where she was. Or about Hankie.

“Got the key, dressed the boy. Now what? You want up, or do I chain Rocky Houdini first?”

In her flustered state, she hadn’t noticed Davis’s approach. His gaze met hers—those eyes that reminded her of a gray-blue sea. That gaze had swept her away in community college.

Not. Going. There. The man had thought the sun came up just to hear him crow, and he’d been about as useless a husband as a screen door on a bass boat.
