A cruel smile splayed across Mary’s lips as she gained her composure. “Such a pity.” She shrugged. “I guess your father, mother, and sister will have to be sold into servitude.”

Dread and wariness flooded Asher’s body. “I have long paid their debts.”

Mary made her way to the table and poured a goblet of wine but did not lift the glass to her lips. “Aye, but your father could not resist the temptation to enter into an unsavory transaction with Lord Allerton. Unfortunately, the deal did not turn out as expected.”

Asher fisted his hands as anger infused every muscle in his body. “You did this. Why? Have I not served you faithfully? Why would you do such a revolting thing?”

Mary pressed her back into the table. “I knew you would refuse me. I could not publicly force you to continue your service without raising eyebrows. I want no

more scandal. Do this for me and I will release your parents and raise your sister to prominence at court. I will find her a good and profitable match. I promise, before

God, this will be done. All you must do is bring back the head of that traitor Jane.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Olivia Rae is an award-winning author of historical and contemporary inspirational romance.
