EXCERPT

A new clothing company had just come out that utilized consultants to sell their trendy tees and luxurious leggings. Most sales took place online, but I was hesitant to purchase without trying on the clothes. Not knowing any local consultants, I reached out to some friends. One happened to know a young woman who set up shop in an RV outside her home, which she opened from time to time. Customers could visit in person, look around, and use the tiny makeshift dressing room to try on the tees, leggings, skirts, and dresses.

When the day arrived for the next open shopping event, I made my way up the windy mountain road to the woman’s property. I was getting a bit nervous that this was nothing more than a lure when I turned the corner and saw the RV parked beside a house. I breathed a sigh of relief and pulled off to the side of the road behind a van that was loaded down with a mom, dad, and more than a few kiddos. The husband took the children down the road a bit farther to play while the wife and I walked into the RV together. In turn, we introduced ourselves to the consultant, whoasked what we were looking for. The woman I had walked in with peered out the window to make sure her family was out of earshot. Her eyes lit up as she told us, “My husband promised me three new dresses in exchange for putting up with his mother for an entire week.” But then she went on, “Let me tell you, it was tough! Everything she said the entire week just flew all over me.” (The southern way of saying her mother-in-law was pushing all her buttons.)

She continued, “Nothing I do is ever good enough for her. I can’t tell you the number of times she has hurt my feelings. My husband thinks I am being too sensitive. Either way, we’re like Marie and Debra on Everybody Loves Raymond. I’m glad to be get- ting these three dresses, but I don’t think spending a week with her was worth it.”

As the consultant chuckled and nodded affirmatively, helping the woman sort through the rack of dresses, I casually looked through the clothing. While I slid one hanger at a time to the left in order to get a better view of the next piece, I felt grateful that I get along well with my mother-in-law. But then I thought, We women get easily offended an awful lot.
