ABOUT THE BOOK

TWO HEARTS BROKEN ALONG THE SAME JAGGED EDGE MAKE A GRISLY DISCOVERY DEEP IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY.

Present Day. Solveig Borja fled Virginia to escape the guilt of one reckless night, and once she settles the family estate, she’s Norway-bound and never looking back. Meanwhile, Kyle Benton has come seeking asylum from past sins—which Solveig shatters even as their hopeless romance blooms. But when they discover a skeleton at Rice Caverns, its century-old mystery holds startling links to the here-and-now.

1919. The Great War is won. Gussie Rice longs for her beau’s return from France, until she learns he’s confined at a stateside hospital and her closest confidant is part of the secret. Her bid for love sparks a confrontation that ricochets through time…

Bad blood and escalating threats swirl around Solveig, and Kyle’s new life proves no haven from the old with his brother’s killer trolling the shadows. As the past rears up, the cavern’s hidden places beckon with power to light their hope or to swallow them in utter darkness.

EXCERPT

Outside, the cold gripped the bones of his hands, tightening around his knuckles like a prosecutor’s handshake. He found her on the porch steps, drying her eyes and facing the mountains. Taking the place beside her, Kyle scrounged for something helpful and came up empty. “We’ve done what we can for today, I think.”

“Our time is ticking down,” she agreed.

“Sorry your wish didn’t come true.”

“It still might.” She warmed her hands, cupping one then the other against the cold. “Can I tell you a terrible secret?”

“No.”

She glanced at him, eyebrows lifted.

“There’s not much you could say I’d call terrible,” he amended.

“Don’t tempt me.” Shadows hollowed out her face. “When I got the call about Bestepappa’s stroke, my first thought was, ‘Is there nothing he won’t do for a visit?’” She covered her eyes.

Kyle placed his hand between her shoulder blades and rubbed circles into her back. “Been a while?”

“Years.” A sniffle. “See? Terrible. I didn’t mean it. I sent flowers, called the hospital for updates, prayed endlessly. Then after a week he died, and all I can think is how much I wish I’d come for Christmas.”

“No. Don’t do that to yourself.” She trembled under his touch, so he patted her back once more and withdrew. “Why don’t you go inside? I’ll button up the barn.”

“N-no, I’ll do it.” Her teeth clicked between the words, and Kyle bit his tongue to keep his own from chattering. “This cold is nothing compared to h-home. I don’t know why I’m shivering like this.” So, Norway was home and her family’s farm was not.

“Can I do anything?”

For a long stretch, she didn’t answer. Maybe she wasn’t going to. He watched with her as the mountains deepened their blues, watched as their icy breath floated away before them.

She dipped her chin. “There is one thing. If you will, you can grant my wish.”
