about the book

Three will be born of pure intent,

One of bravery, one of compassion, and one of faith.

Wield the sword to slay the kings,

And destroy the bloodless wraith.

The immortal Ancients have positioned themselves as creators, worthy of worship and rule. As a result, they have morphed into beasts, keeping Clay Borns divided and dependent upon them. After their parents are captured, and they are left for dead, the Oriel siblings learn of their fate: free Tirra Nova from the Ancients’ oppressive regime and restore divine order to their world. Forced to trust their former enemies and seek the aid of a stardust maiden, the Oriels must rely on their wits and faith to fulfill a seemingly impossible mission.

excerpt

There is an aliveness in the wilderness that I did not expect. Its life force beats like a sprawling heart. Steady and full of peace.

This forest is wise, as if each looming tree is a kind, old man. I can nearly see bearded faces in the bark when I squint my eyes just right. Brion and Fallon agree with my observations, and we have named this forest
The Elder Woods.

Three days ago, the first flakes of snow fell from the sky like crystalline tears. Now, an ivory blanket sparkles beneath the sun and the moon. The snow muffles the sounds of the outside world, so I can hear the inner world’s whispers. If Gachrudia created this beauty, I am in awe of His unsurpassed talent. For the first time, I think I can feel Him. I can hear His call in the quiet night.

The snow has made our travels more arduous, and our nights round the fire are bitingly cold. I have conflicting opinions about snow: I love it and detest it in near equal measure. In our village, thick patches of ice often had me slipping around like a fool. Here in the woods, my feet sink to great depths, which triples my time and exertion. The cold aches in my bones. My body has always been more inclined toward moderate weather. Despite these shortcomings, snow has a certain quality that trumps them all. It is pure magic. From the time I was a tiny girl no taller than my father’s knee, we would gaze out the window, celebrating the first dusting of white sparkles on the ground. Its presence provokes nostalgia somewhere deep inside. For this, I will take the odd shiver or stumble. The snow will always remind me of my father.
