Logan De Witt is working to clear his family’s name with the bank. But when he breaks his leg, hindering his ability to work the farm, Logan is faced with life-changing decisions. EXCERPT

The time had come to exert a bit of her no-nonsense demeanor reserved for those days when Tim Hixson couldn’t pull himself together after acting as accomplice to a stunt at school. Karen grasped Logan’s upper arms and looked him square in the eye. “Logan. Sweetheart. You aren’t making any sense. Whatever is the matter? Start over, and tell me what’s wrong.”

He exhaled and looked at her as though seeing her for the first time. A few silent moments passed while he scanned the letter once more and folded it up. He dropped it as if any response he might give qualified as a lost cause. “Karen, your mother is a respectable woman, and she arrives in four days. She’ll come out here and discover you living in the house of the man who wrote asking to marry you.” A flush crept up Logan’s neck and into his cheeks. “From what you tell me of your family’s mistrust of preachers, I stood a slim chance of securing your mother’s approval. After she sees your living arrangements for what they really are, winning your mother’s blessing will be impossible.”
