Victoria peeked out from behind the tree. Two men eased closer. She shot several times, forcing them back. This was a battle she wouldn’t win. Before long, she’d be surrounded. She had a decision to make. Only it wasn’t really a decision at all. If she stood a chance at surviving, she would have to go into the water and do her best to live.

The men continued to advance through the trees. They were almost on top of her. She emptied the handgun into the space between them and tossed it aside. An eerie silence followed. Where were they? Close? Slowly, she eased toward the water’s edge, praying she would survive. A hail of shots flew past her. “I’m sorry, Aaron. So sorry.”
