Tipping back her head, she stuck out her tongue. A snowflake dropped into her mouth and melted. It’s almost perfect .

“We’ll get more tonight,” Jill said.

Dani froze. Slowly, she shut her mouth and raised her scarf over her nose and cheeks. With the toe of her boot, she traced lazy circles on the sidewalk in front of the grocery store.

Jill crossed the pavement. “Snow, I mean.”

Frowning, Dani pieced together Jill’s greeting. “You think so? My phone didn’t say anything.”

“You trust a phone designed in California over a born-and-bred Wisconsin girl about snow?” Jill shook her head and chuckled.

“Good point.” Lifting the corner of her mouth, Dani smiled as much as she could. Since Paul’s departure, Jill had shown her more grace than anyone should. Following Jill’s lead, New Hope forgave and accepted her. If Dani stopped berating herself for her dealings with Paul, she’d almost be happy. Her throat swelled shut.

Jill bumped her shoulder. “Where are you headed?”

“Nowhere.” Scrubbing a hand over her face, Dani scanned the street. “I’m looking for a little more inspiration for the Christmas show. Thought wandering through town would supercharge my muse.”

“Mind if I join you?”

“Not at all, but don’t you have groceries to take home?”

Unfurling the paper bag, Jill tilted it with a broad grin.

Peeking inside, Dani glimpsed sprinkle cookies and candy canes. Jill shopped for Santa’s workshop and not a person’s pantry.

“Candy cane?” Jill reached inside the bag and retrieved a wrapped candy. Waving the red-and-white striped stick in the air, she wiggled her eyebrows.

Shaking her head, Dani sipped her cocoa.
