Holden had to get through to her somehow. He released the wooden bar and took her face in his hands. Every muscle in her body remained tense, calcified, but she didn’t break away. “I can’t tell you how to grieve, love, or for how long. That’s something you have to work out for yourself. In the meantime, whether I’m here or in Chicago, I’ll be waiting for you.”

Christina bit her lower lip. When her eyes met his, for the first time in six months a shutter didn’t drop over them and she didn’t turn away. Holden froze, aware of the fragility of the connection, a veil of bubble stretched across the small round hole of a wand, breathtakingly beautiful but vulnerable to the slightest movement.

She gave him five seconds before she drew in a shuddering breath, stepped away, and the bubble shattered.

Holden lowered his hands, still warm from her skin, to his sides. “So are you okay if I go?”

“Why do you want to?”

It wasn’t much, but that single question reflected more interest in his life—in anything, actually—than she’d shown in months. Holden would take it.
