ABOUT THE BOOK

He just wants to erase his past. She can’t seem to escape hers. But facing it might put their future in jeopardy.

The day Jack Stewart walked out of jail, he vowed to keep his conviction a secret. The whole thing was just a terrible mistake, and he did his time. Now he wants a new life in a sleepy town where no one knows his name. Deep Haven is the perfect place to start over as a chef. The last thing the former pararescue jumper wants is to get involved. But when Boone Buckam—the guy he owes for getting him out of the slammer—asks for help, how can he refuse?

Colleen Decker has already escaped evil once—as a teenager, she was kidnapped by a murderer. But she’s put all that behind her as a trauma nurse in Minneapolis. Or maybe not, because a freak mistake in the ER sends her past crashing down on her. She needs a timeout in her hometown of Deep Haven. She doesn’t plan to stay—even when she’s roped into the job of flight nurse for the town’s Crisis Response Team chopper. Colleen’s not sure why she’s drawn to danger, but she’ll be safe enough—after all, she’ll need training, and her teacher is a handsome former pararescue jumper. What could go wrong?

When Jack said he didn’t want to get involved, he especially meant his heart—but being with Colleen feels like a fresh start. He’ll even climb aboard a chopper again, despite his vows. They’re headed for a happy ending…

But secrets never stay buried in a small town. And when disaster strikes one snowy night, they’ll both have to decide if the past will destroy them…or if it just might lead them home.

Cozy up to this perfect Deep Haven drama about discovering a season of second chances.

EXCERPT

For the first time in a year, Winston “Win” Stewart would be on the other side of the razor wire with the Stillwater, MN, prison at his back.

An officer came to his cell and tossed him a duffel. Then he told him to pack. Win gathered up his few belongings, shoved them into the bag and paused, glancing around the 6x8 cell.

Oh, couldn’t forget that—he plucked off the photo he’d hung on the wall the first day he’d arrived. In it, his father smiled at his stepmom, an arm slung around his half brother. The perfect family.

Good thing he wasn’t in this one—he wouldn’t want to ruin the image.

The inmates called out to him as he walked behind the officer toward the release office.

“Don’t forget us, man.”

“Never thought you should be in here anyway.”

“Good luck on the other side!”

“You got a raw deal. Good thing they’re springing you today.”

He stood, waiting his turn for out-processing. Another officer handed him a bag that contained his wallet, cell phone, the contents of his pockets, and the clothes he’d been booked in. Win quickly changed out of his prison-issue clothes, thrusting on a pair of blue jeans and pulling a grey T-shirt over his head. He ran a hand through his dark blond hair to tame it, glancing for one last time into the mirror of the small dress-out room.

Iron-blue eyes stared back at him. He barely recognized the man in the mirror.

Win neatly re-folded the few other items of clothing he had and tucked them, his Bible, and a few other books into the duffel.

Once outside the prison gates, he took in a lungful of September air, trying to breathe in freedom.

Win looked around, knowing he wouldn’t spot his dad’s Lincoln Town Car, but hoping to see it all the same.

Good thing he’d arranged for his friend Boone Buckam to pick him up.

“Win! Over here!”

Holding a hand to shield his eyes from the Monday afternoon sunshine, Win spotted his buddy leaning next to a black pickup. Boone straightened, waved him over. Win’s white knight was dressed in black slim jeans, a leather jacket, and shades perched on top of his dark blond hair.

“I appreciate you showing up.” The two shook hands. Then Boone reached out with his other arm and Win found himself on the receiving end of a man hug. He hadn’t known Boone was a hugger. They hadn’t been allowed to even shake hands inside the prison. “It’s nice to see you without the officers watching our every move.”

For the past year, Boone had visited once a month or so. But the last two months, he hadn’t come at all. Win had been surprised he’d offered to pick him up today.

“Good to see you in the sunshine, Win.” Boone took the handle of the duffel and lightened his load. “Let me put this in the truck.”

“Thanks. And I’ve been thinking—a new life needs a new name. It’s not Win anymore. Call me Jack.” It wasn’t a totally new identity—Jack was his middle name. But Jack wanted to bury his past. Preferably deep where no one could find it.

“All right, Jack it is. Want a real meal?” Boone threw Jack’s duffel into the back of his truck.

“After twelve months of prison food? You bet I do.”
