The Friday 56 & First Line Friday | The Carousel Painter

The Friday 56 is hosted weekly by Freda's Voice.
First Line Friday is hosted weekly by Hoarding Books.

Happy Friday!

This week, I finally read this sweet story I picked up from a thrift store years ago, and I had fun being immersed in the world of Carrington's carousel painting for a brief time.

First Line: I perched on the edge of the brocade settee while Mrs. Galloway stared at me as though she'd discovered some new species of life.

From Page 56: "There is one hurdle remaining before I can move." I hoped Mrs. Galloway would rise to the bait.

Without the means to support herself after her father dies, Carrington Brouwer receives the opportunity to use her artistic talent at her friend's father's carousel factory. But the men at the factory are not happy that a woman has been given the very desirable job of painting the elaborately carved horses. When mishaps occur at the factory and jewelry disappears from the home of the factory owner, accusations swirl. Is the handsome young factory manager truly Carrie's ally or will he side with those who believe she should be fired?

Now, feel free to leave a line from a book near you in the comments below.
And be sure to stop by Hoarding Books and Freda's Voice for a peek into other books.

  1. That is a cute book! I read it several years ago. The cover is beautiful! There is something extra special about Carousel Horses!!

  2. My first line comes from The Counterfeit Heiress by Tasha Alexander

I raised the long, curved bow and with two fingers pulled back its string, all the while resisting the urge to remove one of the silver-shafted arrows nestled in the quiver slung over my shoulder.

  3. I love carousels! The book cover grabbed me, and the excerpts pulled me in. Thanks for sharing...and here's mine: “THE OTHER WIFE”

  4. Happy Friday!

Today on my blog, I'm sharing the first line from Melanie Dickerson's novel, The Orphan's Wish. I just started it and I'm loving it so much!

Here, I will share the first line from chapter 8 (that's where I'm at currently).

"Aladdin followed Herr Kaufmann around for the first week."

Hope you have a great weekend full of fun reading!!! ❤📚

  5. Happy Friday!😁

My First Line Fridays comes from a book I’m planning on reading very soon, Shelter In Place by Nora Roberts.

On Friday, July 22, 2005, Simone Knox ordered a large Fanta – orange – to go with her popcorn and Swedish Fish. The choice, her standard night at the movies fare, changed her life, and very likely saved it. Still, she’d never drink Fanta again.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!😎📚📚

  6. Ooh, this sounds like a great read! What a fascinating job to have!
Hope you have an awesome weekend! :)

  7. Happy Friday! The book I'm featuring on my blog is "My Sister's Intended" by Rachael Anderson. It's been on my TBR list for quite some time now, but I finally read it and am so glad I did. Truly an enjoyable read. I will share the first line from Chapter Eleven here. ""Would you care to go for a stroll with me in the gardens, Miss Gifford?" Brand asked, not sure whether or not he wanted her to accept."

  8. I have never in my whole life thought about the people who paint carosel horses until now. Ha! My Friday Quotes - The Prince and the Dressmaker

  9. I love historical books where the female main character has a peculiar job. This sounds great!

  10. I love the cover of this book! And yes, I bought this at a used book sale years ago, and I still need to read it. Thanks for the reminder! Happy reading!

  11. Happy Friday! My first line is from La Risposta: The Answer (A Tuscan Legacy book 9) by Autumn Macarthur:

Prologue: “Instead of returning to her vegetable garden, Teresa Pellegrini rushed into the farmhouse.”

  12. Happy Friday Hallie, hope you have a lovely weekend!

  13. That is such a pretty cover and sounds like a good book. Happy reading and happy weekend!

  14. Gorgeous cover!

I'm sharing the first line of "If I Live" on my blog today. I'll share the first line of chapter five here: "My alternate burner phone rings as I stare at my evidence board."

    Happy reading!

  15. The book I shared on my blog this week is Her Place in Time by Stephenia H McGee but my next book is going to be The Baker's secret by Stephen P Kiernan so I'll share that first line here: "All through those years of war, the bread tasted of humiliation." Hope you have happy weekend with plenty of reading! :)

  16. Gorgeous cover!

Today I’m sharing lines from Kat Mizera’s Smitten in Santorini.

“Melina Lakkas was having the mack daddy of bad days.”

I hope you are having a better day than she is!

I’m featuring lines from Kate Wiloughby’s upcoming sports romance Clean Sweep on my blog. I hope you can stop by.

Happy Reading! Janine from @The World Was Hers for the Reading

  17. That sounds like a fun read. I'm sharing from a book that will be out early next month ( won an uncorrected proof on GoodReads) on my blog today, The Daisy Children by Sofia Grant, so here is the second line:

"It wasn't the fault of the trousers, of course, but it was tempting to blame them nonetheless."

    Happy Reading!

  18. I always love checking out thrift stores for books - you never know what you'll find. :)
