EXCERPT

“Okay, I need to head home and pack.” I make my way toward the hallway.

My mother jumps out of her chair. “Wait, I have something for you.” She retreats into her bedroom. I await her return, worrying that she’s going to offer me some of the broken luggage she’s stockpiled.

When she comes back, she’s carrying a book.

“Here, I want you to take this with you.” She places a well-used Bible into my hands. I’m not sure if this is just another of her second-hand purchases or if she’s read and studied the Bible more than I ever realized, but it has definitely been loved on by someone.

“Mom,” I say softly, the worry shifting into sadness, “I have a Bible. I don’t need another one. Plus, what will you do without it while I’m gone?” I give it back to her, but she refuses to accept it.

“Oh, I have lots more but this one is my favorite.” She eyes the worn, leather-bound book. “But I want you to have something of mine with you while you’re gone. It’s kind of like I’ll be there with you that way.”

My heart squeezes at her thoughtfulness. Letting go of things is difficult for hoarders, so for my mom to give me such a valuable possession stretches my ability to keep it together.

Fighting back tears, I put the Bible in my purse and give her one last hug.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

As a child, whenever anyone asked me that question, I always had 2 answers ready to offer: an author or a Wimbledon champion (that’s a tennis tournament, in case you didn’t know).

Although I never made it to a professional level of tennis stardom (or an amateur level for that matter; the best I could do was local tennis club play once or twice a week), I was able to realize my dream of becoming an author.

But it was a long time coming.

There were detours along the way – teaching elementary school, running children’s ministries, parenting and starting my own organizing business – as well as a few unexpected overseas adventures, but I finally put pencil to paper (yes, I’m old school) and used all my life experiences to write a story that I hoped would make a difference.

With the publication of my first book, Perfectly Arranged (Scrivenings Press, October 2021), I guess I’m finally grown up now and my dreams have come true.

However, now that I’ve reached adulthood I don’t plan on retiring. No, I think I’ll keep going … I have plenty of imaginary people and places to share with the world.
