EXCERPT
I suppose it gets easier to become someone you don’t recognize when you walk away from yourself.
My eye is swollen from the cheap shot Meelis gave me during our fight, and I wear a few other scars on my face—a gouge out of my jaw, another along my hairline, but that might be from the crowbar a perp named Bryce Mattson beaned me with a couple days and twenty-three years ago.
Despite the clocking he gave me, he was a kid and I wish I could have saved him.
My hair is shorn high and tight, and it makes the planes of my face stand out, all hard, lean angles. And, I’m built—I’ve put on at least twenty pounds of muscle, mostly in the upper body.
All that thuggery builds muscle.
My clothes have mostly dried, but I still feel grimy, although that might also be from my current situation.
“I want you to find out, Staz where she got the code. And then get rid of her.”
Oh Frankie, what are you doing here? My mouth tightens at the corners.
“Please don’t hurt me,” she says quietly.
I feel sick. She doesn’t know me. Which tightens my gut because I’d hoped she did.
Hoped she remembered a kinder, gentler me.
One who would never hurt her.
The fact that Alexander gave me this job, however, tells me that man is gone.
I have crossed hard lines.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” I say quietly. “Just sit there and let me think.”
She stares up at me, almost in disbelief, and maybe I don’t know what I’m doing, but there’s a part of me who believes, despite the image that stares at me in the mirror, that I haven’t strayed that far from myself.
When I worked undercover, so many ages ago, I had a lifeline, someone I could call if I got in over my head.
You guessed it—that person was Burke. I had him on speed dial, and I just had to press the number, and he had my back.
I scrub a hand down my face and pull out my phone. I don’t know who’s on the other end of my speed dial, but I press #9, then drop the phone back into my pocket.
My dark hope—and you know how I feel about hope—is that Shelby is picking up on the other end.
“Frankie, what are you doing here?”
Her mouth opens. “How do you…” Frankie pulls her legs onto the sofa and pushes herself back and away from me. “How do you know my name?”
