We stared into the darkness for a long time before he said, “You know how when you read a book and the author is a cruel piece of work and kills off one of your favorite characters?”

I turned my head to look at him. “For a brief moment, you might put the book down or, as I’ve seen some people do, throw the book across the room,” he gave me a nudge causing a smile to barely make an appearance on my lips.

“You might even vow never to read to the end because you can’t bear the thought that it might happen again or that there will be no chance at redemption. After some time, however, you pick the book back up with severe anxiety and a hesitant eye and read the first sentence of the next chapter. And then you read the next sentence and the next.

“Turning the page might even be excruciating. But the story continues, Rachel. Your story continues and the exciting part is that you get to write it. And because I know you, I know it will be spectacular.”
