about the book

She’s protecting her children. He’s redeeming his past.
But there’s nothing convenient about saving their patchwork family.

Wisconsin, 1931—All widowed mother Marian Ward wants is to provide for her girls. However, she faces the dead of winter with no income and dwindling resources. Then she overhears a nefarious conversation, putting her life and that of her children in immediate danger.

Aiming to make amends to the Wards, Gilbert steps in when the threat to Marian escalates. It costs him dearly. Either lose his career or marry her, and be tied to his past until death do them part.

He leaves the decision to Marian, who will do anything to protect her girls, even marry the son of the man who ruined her family. How will their fledgling trust prove strong enough to fulfill their vows as winter tightens its grip and desperation stalks at the door?

Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge.

excerpt

She reached for his sore cheek. The swelling had dissipated, leaving only a purplish-yellow hue in its wake. The coolness of her touch eased the ache that still resided along his cheekbone.

He covered her hand, securing it to his injured side. “I would take another of these many times over if that’s what is required to keep you safe. I made a promise, Marian, and I’ll see it through.”

“I don’t doubt that.” She wiggled her hand free and clasped her fingers in her lap. “At what cost, Gil? I don’t fancy being widowed a second time.”

A pang twisted in his chest.

“Ready, Mr. Gil?” Nettie appeared in the kitchen, Essie on her heels, snatching the moment away before Gilbert could understand it. “We’re at the part where Anne meets Gilbert Blythe. And he’s sooo handsome.”

Gilbert scratched his chin. “What do you know of handsome men, Miss Nettie?” Marian chuckled beside him.

“Anne thinks he’s handsome. Tells Diana so.” Nettie grabbed Gilbert’s hand, and dragged him from his chair. “Come see for yourself.”

Gilbert glanced over his shoulder as Essie grabbed his other arm. Worry lines marred Marian’s forehead, but the indulgent smile warmed his heart.
