about the book

A mysterious stranger holds the key to the fate of the nation.

In the final days of the American Revolutionary War, Nessa Shaw tends to the sick and wounded at the Continental Army camp in Charlestown, South Carolina. When she stumbles upon a man lying unconscious on a forest trail, she quickly realizes he is unlike any patient she has ever encountered. With no memory of his past, his only clues to his identity are his first name—August—and the certainty that he is a Patriot. Against her better judgment, Nessa grows closer to August, trusting him with secrets that could cost her dearly. But when she discovers a deadly plot that could change the course of the war, Nessa must question everything she thought she knew about August and his true allegiances.

excerpt

His expression was deadly serious now, eyes narrow, jaw hard. Staring into the middle distance, he said, “I may not know the date of my birth, or where I come from, but I know who I am. I am a Patriot. I believe in man’s God-given right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I know just as surely that I came to Ashley Hill for a purpose. I feel that in every fiber of my being. I must learn what that purpose is, and accomplish it, before time runs out and the Patriot cause is lost forever.”

“But you don’t know who tried to kill you, or who else might still wish you dead,” Nessa said. “You don’t know whom you can trust.”

“In that, I’m no different than any man in the army. Betrayals come from those we believe to be friends. You know this as well as I do, Nessa—and you cannot truly want me to refuse to do my part while other men venture their lives. You may say that you do, but you know in your heart that you would be ashamed of me.”

Nessa swallowed over a painful lump in her throat. “It feels like sending you into battle blindfolded,” she said.

“I don’t need to see my way forward,” he said. “God will guide my steps. The truth will out—it always does in the end. The memories I’ve lost will be restored. And then—”

She could see the effort it took him to stop speaking, to bite down on whatever words he wanted to say to her, but could not.

“Well,” August said at last. “That is a conversation for another day—but one that I hope and believe will take place, and soon.”

He slid the toe of a worn secondhand boot into the stirrup, and in one fluid, effortless movement, swung himself onto Arion’s back. He had no hat to tip, but he touched his hand to his brow and gave Nessa a deep nod.

“Until we meet again,” he said, and rode off to join the other horsemen.
