Yohannan’s No Longer a Slumdog is a haunting read. Based on his
experience doing missions in Asia, Yohannan delivers heartbreaking facts and
stories of children living in horrific and unimaginable conditions. Yet,
thankfully his book is not without hope. He tells of the good work Gospel for
Asia’s Bridge of Hope has been doing in the lives of thousands of children,
meeting both physical and spiritual needs. No Longer a Slumdog is one of
those books you cannot put down without feeling compelled to help in some way.

of justice, and as I read, I appreciated how openly he explored and exposed his
own experiences and subsequent thoughts, flaws and all. While deeply personal, Overrated manages to transcend individual
experience and excellently engages a widespread mindset. Rooted in passion,
humility, humor and Gospel truths, Overrated
is convicting and impossible to ignore. Any follower of Christ should read it, discuss

the River Runs is nothing less than a life-changing adventure. She takes
her readers along for a wild, wondrous ride through the Amazon, as she recounts
her experiences with its forgotten, yet beautiful people that challenged and
changed her. These people she encountered live so differently than the typical
American, yet they live with inspiring purpose and simple determination and
have much to offer in surprising and unexpected ways. Incredible.
As I read story after well-written story, I felt captivated
and convicted. While Minter’s stories and reflections are deeply and uniquely
hers, her revelations and conclusions still speak convincingly to a broader
Christian experience and bring essential, often neglected truths to the
forefront. These will not be easily forgotten, and I know they will continue to
remind me of the importance of worshipping God through loving and serving the
impoverished and the neglected.
Valuable, insightful and honest, Minter’s narrative should
not be missed. Don’t hesitate to join her for a trip along the Amazon. I highly
recommend it.

Robin Parrish’s novel, Persecuted,
takes readers on a fast-paced, action-filled, thrilling ride. Twist after turn,
the pages grabbed my attention with murder, hired assassins, political corruption
and more. It is a quick and entertaining read.
Still, I must say, I felt a bit disappointed at the end.
Firstly, it is important to note this Parrish novel is based on an upcoming
Daniel Lusko film with the same name. Throughout the novel, scenes stuck out to
me as distinctly cinematic and increased my awareness of the film basis. Many
of the descriptions seemed flat – simply precise replications of images on a
screen and lacking the depth I generally find in writing. From the beginning, I
had hoped I would be able to forget the story was first a film, but I was left feeling
less than impressed the writing did not allow me to do that. Secondly – and I
think, more importantly, the premise of persecution fails to come through in
the plot. The supposed persecution stems from the introduction of the new,
scary “Faith and Fairness Act,” yet I never found a sufficient and satisfactory
explanation of this act and why it might necessitate the extremities of the
storyline. A more detailed summary of the act – as opposed to the vague
references peppered among the action – would have helped to provide a more
