About the Book
★★★★★
Nineteen-year-old Carrie Ann Bell is independent and spirited. The only thing she really fears are the Union soldiers fighting against her Confederate friends. When her youngest sister runs away from home, brave Carrie Ann is determined to find her and bring her back. Disguised as a soldier, she sets off – only to find she's fallen into the hands of the enemy.

Her childhood friend Confederate Major Joshua Blevins has warned her against these Yankees: they're all devils, ready to inflict evil on unsuspecting young women. When Colonel Peyton Collier arrests her for her impersonation of an officer, it seems to confirm all her fears.

Soon, though, she finds herself drawn to the handsome, gallant colonel. He rescued her, protected her, and has been every inch the gentleman. Carrie Ann discovers that her foe has become her ally – and more than that, someone she could love. But the arrival of Joshua in the Union camp as a spy will test her loyalties. Will she protect someone who has been like family or be loyal to this stranger to whom she wants to offer her heart? When her world is being torn apart around her, whom should she trust?

Andrea Boeshaar’s newest novel, A Thousand Shall Fall, tells a captivating historical tale of war and romance. She sets her story within the Shenandoah Valley and in the middle of the region’s conflicts in the Civil War, which adds much excitement, drama, and vivid detail to the plot. Brought together by this devastating war, each with their specific duties and roles, Carrie Ann Bell and Colonel Peyton Collier develop a heartwarming and hopeful relationship. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Carrie Ann and Peyton, seeing their relationship grow on and off the battlefield, and absolutely loved their story. Any fan of historical romance will not want to miss A Thousand Shall Fall - I would definitely recommend it.

Called to Pray: Astounding Stories of Answered Prayer by Linda Evans Shepherd

About the Book
★★★★★
When you feel a nudge to pray, what will you do?

Most of us have felt it at one time or another: that unexplained prompting in our hearts to stop and pray for a friend, a loved one, or even a stranger. Sometimes we are even awakened from a deep sleep with an even deeper need to go to God in prayer. Where do those urges come from? Are they truly from God? Or are they merely stray thoughts? And if we respond in prayer, are others' lives affected at all?

In Called to Pray, Linda Evans Shepherd shares dozens of inspiring true stories of people who have heeded God's call to pray and the astonishing results of those impromptu prayers. Through accounts of people being protected from harm and rescued from danger, of needs being met and hearts being encouraged, you'll see that God is involved in an active and dynamic relationship with us – and that we can be part of his plan to bless others.

If you have ever wondered if prayer has any real effect or doubted that God communicates with us personally, this heart-stirring book will amaze, inspire, and equip you to respond to those holy promptings.

Linda Evans Shepherd’s Called to Pray: Astounding Stories of Answered Prayer compiles inspiring stories attesting to the power of prayer. Each chapter, with multiple stories, shows people choose to pray and see amazing and nearly unbelievable results. As a whole, Called to Pray offers its readers great reminders that God does answer prayers, as well as encouragement to actually pray when feeling the urge to pray. It’s a beneficial and valuable read, and I would recommend it.

Imagine Heaven: Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises, and the Exhilarating Future That Awaits You by John Burke

★★★★
Goodreads | Amazon
1 out of 25 Americans has had a near-death experience.
Do they reveal the Heaven of the Bible?

All of us long to know what life after death will be like. Bestselling author John Burke is no exception. In Imagine Heaven, he compares more than one hundred gripping stories of near-death experiences (NDEs) to what Scripture says about our biggest questions of Heaven: Will I be myself? Will I see friends and loved ones? What will Heaven look like? What is God like? What will we do forever? What about children and pets?

Burke shows how the common experiences shared by thousands of near-death survivors--including doctors, college professors, bank presidents, people of all ages and cultures, and even blind people--point to the exhilarating picture of Heaven promised in the Bible.

This thrilling journey into the afterlife will make you feel like you've been there, forever changing the way you view the life to come--and the way you live your life today. You'll discover Heaven is even more amazing than you've ever imagined.

With so many stories of near-death experiences circulating these days, it is important to understand the biblical portrayal of heaven. In Imagine Heaven: Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises, and the Exhilarating Future That Awaits You, John Burke compiles numerous stories of near-death experiences and highlights the commonalities the stories share. As he shares these stories, he also ties in Scripture and shows the connections to the biblical glimpses of heaven. A fascinating read, Imagine Heaven is one book I appreciate reading, and interested readers should definitely take the time to read it.

Thanks to Baker Book Bloggers, I received a copy of Imagine Heaven and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Aleppo Code by Terry Brennan

★★★★★
Will the code reveal history’s most powerful weapon for destruction – or humanity’s only hope?

The living members of Tom Bohannon’s band of adventurers gather again in Jerusalem – physically battered, emotionally exhausted, spiritually challenged, and in various stages of shock – to examine a copy of the tenth-century Aleppo Code, the oldest complete text of Jewish scripture. What the clues inside reveal could lead to the reuniting of the Ark of the Covenant with its true source of power, a weapon that could lead to victory for this ragged bunch trying to save the world.

Hunted by the relentless assassins of the Prophet’s Guard and caught in the web of an international conspiracy plotting the conquest of Europe, Bohannon’s team searches the ruins of Ancient Babylon. Their search lands them amid the chaos that engulfs western Iraq, but they must press on to accomplish one of the most pivotal pieces of end-times prophecy. This intrepid group will uncover secrets that require them to risk everything for their faith, their country, and the peace of all mankind.

Unfolding against the backdrop of an Israeli/U.S. strike against Iran and the planned economic overthrow of the European Union by the sinister, secret head of the international Muslim Brotherhood, The Aleppo Code is a heart-pounding race. Brennan takes an epic story on a grand scale and tells it primarily through the eyes of one man who is desperately trying to save the world as he follows God’s purpose for his life.

The third of Terry Brennan’s Jerusalem Prophecies novels, The Aleppo Code takes its readers on a riveting adventure rivaling that of Indiana Jones. Tom Bohannon and his team follow clues around the world in search of an important and powerful historical artifact, hoping to keep it out of the wrong hands. Though I haven’t yet read the previous two books (The Sacred Cipher and TheBrotherhood Conspiracy), I certainly enjoyed reading The Aleppo Code with all its fast-paced and non-stop adventure, intrigue, and action, and would recommend that fans of adventure take the time to read this book - but any interested reader should start from the beginning (unlike me), as I imagine reading the first two books would help in understanding the characters better. Still, it’s a highly enjoyable, exciting, and worthwhile read.

Thanks to Kregel Publications, I received a copy of The Aleppo Code and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Golden Braid by Melanie Dickerson

About the Book
★★★★★
The one who needs rescuing isn't always the one in the tower…

Rapunzel can throw a knife better than any man. She paints beautiful flowering vines on the walls of her plaster houses. She sings so sweetly she can coax even a beast to sleep. But there are two things she is afraid her mother might never allow her to do: learn to read and marry.

Fiercely devoted to Rapunzel, her mother is suspicious of every man who so much as looks at her daughter and warns her that no man can be trusted. After a young village farmer asks for Rapunzel's hand in marriage, Mother decides to move them once again – this time, to the large city of Hagenheim.

The journey proves treacherous, and after being rescued by a knight – Sir Gerek – Rapunzel, in turn, rescues him farther down the road. As a result, Sir Gerek agrees to repay his debt to Rapunzel by teaching her to read. Could there be more to him than his arrogance and desire to marry for riches and position?

As Rapunzel acclimates to life in a new city, she uncovers a mystery that will forever change her life. In this Rapunzel story unlike any other, a world of secrets and treachery are about to be revealed after seventeen years. How will Rapunzel finally take control of her own destiny? And who will prove faithful to a lowly peasant girl with no one to turn to?

In her latest fairytale retelling, Melanie Dickerson takes on the well-known story of Rapunzel and crafts an addictive and adventurous novel. After relocating to Hagenheim with her controlling mother, Rapunzel decides the time is right to begin branching out and exploring the various opportunities available. The more Rapunzel grasps her independence, the more she encounters the dangers of long-kept secrets, manipulative villains, and even heartfelt romance. It’s an all-around fantastic and enjoyable read and makes a great addition to Dickerson’s Hagenheim novels. I highly recommend it to readers of fairytale retellings. (I should note that the events of The Golden Braid overlaps with the events of The Princess Spy, so it helps to read The Princess Spy first.)

Brave Enough: Getting Over Our Fears, Flaws, and Failures to Live Bold and Free by Nicole Unice

★★★★★
Find the courage to be who you are – not who you wish you were.

Is fear holding you back from becoming your best self? Does it add stress to your day and keep you up at night? What could be different if you let go and started living brave today?

Bravery doesn’t have to mean cliff diving out of your comfort zone. Life is about being brave enough – for yourself, for God, for your tasks, and for your calling – right where He’s placed you. A brave-enough life is one lived fully and confidently, with your shoulders relaxed and free from the weight of responsibility and the burden of trying too hard.

Nicole Unice, author of She’s Got Issues, wants that life to become a reality for you. She challenges you to get real about where you are right now – the places where you feel too scared to change, too tired to endure, or too worried to let go. Through personal stories and practical application, Nicole will lead you on a journey to harness all of your misspent doubts, concerns, and fears – and discover what God is saying about who you can be.

In Brave Enough: Getting Over Our Fears, Flaws, and Failures to Live Bold and Free, Nicole Unice offers her readers encouraging words to choose bravery over fear and insecurities, to be the person God intended. It’s a book with a challenge, and with Unice’s own stories, practical insight, and beneficial Scriptural reminders, the challenge is hard to ignore. I certainly benefitted from reading Brave Enough and would easily be able to recommend it to fellow readers needing a bit more bravery in their lives. All in all, it’s a worthwhile read.

About the Book
★★★★★
Christmas takes a very different turn when the guests of honor break up instead of announcing their engagement. Trapped with his family, they learn that love looks different than either imagined.

Both in their eighties, Dodie and Wilson Binder celebrate every Christmas as if it were their last. This year, their grandson Micah is planning to ask his girlfriend, Katie, to marry him so they can celebrate with the whole family. But things go very wrong when she says, "no." Now they are stuck. Too many people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for disaster. But sometimes too much is just enough. Especially when it's Christmas.

Even though Cynthia Ruchti’s An Endless Christmas begins with Katie turning down Micah’s marriage proposal, it tells a truly heartwarming holiday tale. The Binder family gathers under one roof to celebrate the Christmas holiday and welcomes Katie with open arms, despite her refusal. Seeing the family interact and keep their focus on the true meaning of the holiday makes this novella an inspirational and thought-provoking read. Entirely charming and perfect for a free weekend, An Endless Christmas  will delight any fans of contemporary fiction eager for a holiday-related book. I would certainly recommend it.

The Last Days According to Jesus: When Did Jesus Say He Would Return? by R.C. Sproul

★★★★
Goodreads | Amazon
Speculation and theories concerning what the last days have in store for us abound. In the hype of sensational books and movies, one important question is often obscured:

What did
Jesus believe and teach about the end times and the timing of his return?

In his characteristically precise and compelling style, renowned theologian R.C. Sproul points us to the words of Christ as providing solid, biblical footing amid ever-shifting opinions about the age to come. He covers key questions, such as:

· What exactly did Jesus teach about the last days on Mount Olivet?

· What generation will witness the end?
· What did Paul teach in his letters?
· What did John teach in Revelation?
· When is the resurrection?
· When is the millennium?

In addition to answering these important questions about the last days, Dr. Sproul presents an authoritative explanation of biblical teaching about the end times and the timing of Christ's return.

Understanding the “last days” according to Bible is a difficult task, as many varying interpretations exist. In The Last Days According to Jesus: When Did Jesus Say He Would Return?, R.C. Sproul tackles several of the challenging questions regarding the “last days” and offers his interpretation of the words of Jesus. He does use a lot of quotations from scholars and commentators as support, which makes a bit tedious at times, but overall, the book is quite interesting. Whether or not readers agree with his conclusions about the “last days,” The Last Days According to Jesus is an entirely thought-provoking read.

Thanks to Baker Book Bloggers, I received a copy of The Last Days According to Jesus and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Mountain Midwife by Laurie Alice Eakes

★★★★★
For nearly two hundred years, women in Ashley Tolliver’s family have practiced the art of midwifery in their mountain community. Now she wants to take her skills a step further, but attending medical school means abandoning those women to whom she has dedicated her life, the mountains she loves, and the awakening of her heart.

Ashley Tolliver has tended to the women of her small Appalachian community for years. As their midwife, she thinks she has seen it all. Until a young woman gives birth to a baby at Ashley’s home and is abducted just as she tries to take the dangerously bleeding woman her to the nearest hospital. Now Ashley is on a mission to find the woman and her newborn baby…before it’s too late.

Hunter McDermott is on a quest – to track down his birth mother. After receiving more media attention than he could ever want for being in the right place at the right time, he receives a mysterious phone call from a woman claiming to be his mother. Hunter seeks out the aid of the local midwife in the mountain town where the phone call originated – surely she can shed some light on his own family background.

Ashley isn’t prepared for the way Hunter’s entrance into her world affects her heart and her future. He reignites dreams of her own family she has long put aside in favor earning her medical degree and being able to do even more for her community. But is it commitment to her calling or fear of the unknown that keeps her feet firmly planted in the Appalachian soil? Or is it something more—fear of her growing feelings for Hunter – that make her hesitant to explore the world beyond the mountains?

Laurie Alice Eakes’s The Mountain Midwife ventures into small-town Appalachia with mystery, intrigue, and danger. Ashley Tolliver, a midwife with strong ties to her family history, loves serving her tight-knit community, yet longs to attend medical school and become a doctor. The Five Times I Met Myself by James L. Rubart

About the Book
★★★★★
What if you met your twenty-three-year-old self in a dream? What would you say?

Brock Matthews' once promising life is unraveling. His coffee company. His marriage.

So when he discovers his vivid dreams – where he encounters his younger self – might let him change his past mistakes, he jumps at the chance. The results are astonishing, but also disturbing.

Because getting what Brock wants most in the world will force him to give up the one thing he doesn't know how to let go… and his greatest fear is that it's already too late.

James L. Rubart’s The Five Times I Met Myself had me fascinated from the start. Rubart’s main character, Brock Matthews, sees his life slowly begin to spiral out of his control, when a friend introduces him to a dreaming technique that changes everything. In his journey through real-life problems and dream encounters with his past, Brock must confront unsavory aspects of himself and learn how to move forward with a promising future. End of the Trail by Vickie McDonough

★★★★★
Goodreads | Amazon
He won a ranch in a card game. She claims the ranch is her inheritance. He's not leaving – and neither is she.

Brooks Morgan is quick on the draw, but his weapon of choice is his smile. He’s smart and witty and has charmed his way through much of life, but now that he’s growing older – and a bit wiser. He wants to stop drifting and settle down. He sees his chance when he wins Raven Creek Ranch in a poker game, but when he goes to claim his prize, a pretty woman with a shotgun says the ranch belongs to her. Brooks isn’t leaving his one and only chance to make something of his life – but neither is she. Can they reach an agreement? Or will a greedy neighbor force a showdown, causing them both to lose they want most in life?

In the final novel of the Texas Trails series, Vickie McDonough offers readers one last look into the Morgan family. End of the Trail follows Brooks Morgan, the son of Riley and Annie of Long Trail Home, as he decides to mature, settle down, and claim a ranch he won in a poker game - yet faces a bit of a challenge in the form of Keri Langston. As the two stubbornly determine how to move forward, their story fills with wonderful things: drama, action, intrigue, humor, romance. It’s a great read that I could not put down and fits very well at the end of the series. Fans of the Texas Trails series will not be disappointed with this last one.
