The Friday 56 & First Line Friday | Where the Red Fern Grows

The Friday 56 is hosted weekly by Freda's Voice.
First Line Friday is hosted weekly by Hoarding Books.

Happy Friday!

I'm getting excited about the 24 in 48 Readathon that starts tomorrow, and my TBR stack is ready to go. Well-loved favorites, most of these books will be rereads for me, but I'll be reading Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls for the first time. As a child, the movie was one of my absolute favorites, yet I never got around to reading the book. Now, that's about to changeand it's going to be a good weekend, I'm sure.

Enjoy!

First Line: When I left my office that beautiful spring day, I had no idea what was in store for me.

From Page 56: "It'll catch him all right," he said, "and it won't fail. You see a coon is a curious little animal. Anything that is bright and shiny attracts him."

ABOUT THE BOOK
For fans of Old Yeller and Shiloh, Where the Red Fern Grows is a beloved classic that captures the powerful bond between man and man’s best friend.
Billy has long dreamt of owning not one, but two, dogs. So when he’s finally able to save up enough money for two pups to call his own—Old Dan and Little Ann—he’s ecstatic. It doesn’t matter that times are tough; together they’ll roam the hills of the Ozarks.
Soon Billy and his hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Stories of their great achievements spread throughout the region, and the combination of Old Dan’s brawn, Little Ann’s brains, and Billy’s sheer will seems unbeatable. But tragedy awaits these determined hunters—now friends—and Billy learns that hope can grow out of despair, and that the seeds of the future can come from the scars of the past.

Now, feel free to leave a line from a book near you in the comments below.
And be sure to stop by Hoarding Books and Freda's Voice for a peek into other books.

  1. Happy Friday!

    Good luck on your readathon!!

My FLF comes from the book I’m reading now, Liza’s Second Chance by Molly Jebber!

Lisa Schrock, clenched her teeth and dug her fingers in the fresh dough in her Amish bakery. The forced smiles, nods to her friends’ compliments, and suppressing the truth about her husband had been difficult, but she’d managed to keep her miserable marriage a secret.

Have an awesome weekend and happy reading!

  2. I li love reading my childhood favorites during readathons. Putting together a great stack to read for it is part of the fun. And good luck reading Where the Red Fern Grows. I've read it many times. The first time a teacher read it to us in class. At the end of the book we were all bawling. Good times. 😂

  3. I loved this book as a kid!

    Happy Friday!

Over on my blog I am showcasing Naomi Rawlings's novel Love's Bright Tomorrow. Here I will share the first line from the novel I am currently reading, Mary and Bright by Shannon Graupman.

"Mary Bradford's heart raced as she sat on the edge of her king sized bed -- her gaze affixed on the single white sheet of paper resting on the nightstand."

  5. I just recently heard of the 24 in 48 idea--are you reading as many books as you can in 24 hours? Sounds lovely! Happy reading and happy Friday!

  6. Your readathon sounds great! And your to-read pile is awesome :)

I'm sharing the first line from Aint Misbehaving by Marji Laine on my blog. I'm currently reading My Sister's Prayer by Mindy Starns Clark and Leslie Gould. It's the middle book in a trilogy and I really shouldn't have read the third book first, because it did ruin some of the big-picture suspense. Here's the first line:

The cry for help came as I was coasting toward the bicycle rack at the far end of the story.

Here, I will share the first line of Chapter 5 from the book I'm currently reading, The Captivating Lady Charlotte by Carolyn Miller "It was entirely possible that the excitement of last month's come-out ball was about to be surpassed."

    Have a wonderful weekend!
