A Song Unheard | Character Spotlights + Giveaway

ABOUT THE BOOKS

Willa Forsythe is both a violin prodigy and top-notch thief, which make her the perfect choice for a crucial task at the outset of World War I—to steal a cypher from a famous violinist currently in Wales.

Lukas De Wilde has enjoyed the life of fame he’s won—until now, when being recognized nearly gets him killed. Everyone wants the key to his father’s work as a cryptologist. And Lukas fears that his mother and sister, who have vanished in the wake of the German invasion of Belgium, will pay the price. The only light he finds is in meeting the intriguing Willa Forsythe.

But danger presses in from every side, and Willa knows what Lukas doesn’t—that she must betray him and find that cypher, or her own family will pay the price as surely as his has.

Three years into the Great War, England’s greatest asset is their intelligence network—field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack every German telegram. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren’t enough.

Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy that just won’t give up. He’s smitten quickly by the too-intelligent Margot, but how to convince a girl who lives entirely in her mind that sometimes life’s answers lie in the heart?

Amidst biological warfare, encrypted letters, and a German spy who wants to destroy not just them, but others they love, Margot and Drake will have to work together to save them all from the very secrets that brought them together.

CHARACTER SPOTLIGHTS

The music seeped into her soul like fog over the Thames. (p. 7)

With only a street-wise band of thieves to call family, Willa Forsythe has lived a life focused on simple survival. Through the uncertainly, though, especially as she hesitates to embrace the post-A Name Unknown changes, a beat-up, discarded violin allows her moments of joy and reprieve—and now, the opportunity for her most rewarding theft yet.

"I . . . I picked up that battered old violin that day, and it felt as if . . . as if I'd finally found a part of myself I hadn't known was missing." (p. 70)

Lukas De Wilde is her mark. A world-class violinist, Belgian refugee, and well-regarded ladies' man, he is not the type of man to make her task easily accomplished—and he has a few secrets of his own.

Willa granted herself a moment to draw in a breath. To tell her stomach to behave itself and her nerves to be calm. He was a man like any other. It didn't matter that he was handsome. And rich. And quite possibly the best violinist alive today. He was a mark. (p. 55)

His mother and sister (The Number of Love's heroine, Margot) remain trapped in German-occupied Belgium, and the pain from an inconvenient war wound continues to remind him of his familial duty. Still, Lukas cannot help but become as entranced by Willa as she is by him.

She was just standing there, her dress white and simple and fashionable and hanging perfectly on a slender frame. Her hair, straight and apparently so silky that pins would not contain it, slipped here and there from beneath her hat.

But it was the look on her face that arrested him. She stood there surveying the building from which he'd just emerged as if seeing the girders and beams and foundation behind the facade. (p. 29)

Individual pursuits allow them to cross paths, but ultimately, the music brings Willa and Lukas together. Danger looms around them, witty flirtations eventually give way to deeper feelings, and through it all, the music remains at the heart of their connection.

"Yes, well. I never trust a man who calls me pretty."

Now those dark eyes snapped and sparkled, and the corners of his mouth tugged up a degree. "And why is that?"

"Because I am not. So anyone who would say so is a flatterer, and I've no use for that sort."

"Ah." He led her back toward Terrace. "Thank you for the advice. Though I cannot say as pretty would have ever been a word I would choose to describe you. You are far too interesting to be pretty." (p. 99)
