“It’s a sting!” The driver shouted from the front of the van.
The hooded man shoved the woman into Ethan. She screamed again as the force propelled them onto the sidewalk. Ethan grunted as she slammed into his ribs, and the concrete connected with his spine.
The white van cut its way back into traffic, creating a domino effect of horns and screeching brakes. The woman rolled away from him, and Ethan shoved himself off the pavement to his feet and tried to ignore the pain in his chest. Probably cracked a rib.
Shaking his head, he focused on the woman who stood facing traffic with her back to him. Was she trembling? Understandable, given her close call.
He placed a light hand on her shoulder. “Are you okay, miss?” She spun to face him—and her blue eyes flashed in rage. “It’s detective, and no, I’m not fine. You just ruined my chance to nab those perps.”
about the author
Kristen Hogrefe Parnell writes suspenseful fiction from a faith perspective for women and young adults. A former English teacher, she now designs curriculum for a Christian academy and spends most of her time at her favorite assignment to date: being a mom to her toddler. Her books have won the Selah Award and the Grace Award, among others. She lives in the Tampa, Florida area with her husband and son.
