Maxwell had been thrown into a dark pit, one he had dug himself, one pregnant with emptiness, one so deep he felt it impossible to climb out. He was lost yet still present in the immediate world. He could recognize faces around him and acknowledge when they spoke, but he could not speak. He could not think of any coherent words to offer in response. He could only discern the sound of panic in other voices, the sound of grief in those around him, the sound of his own guttural drone.

In truth, it was his daughters that were truly lost. But how? They had been right there, right in front of him, within arm’s reach, within his grasp, and yet his hands and fingers could not gain purchase. He envisioned the girls reaching toward him, but he could not take hold of an arm, a shoulder, anything, and pull them to safety.

about the author

Mr. Arnold‘s career as an actor/author spans over five decades with multiple stage and film credits. He has recorded over one hundred audiobooks and is the author of the Urban Chronicles suspense series and the multi-volume biblical/historical fiction series entitled The Song of Prophets and Kings (available in all formats wherever books are sold). When not writing, he can be found hiking on a trail somewhere in the world. He and his lovely wife Kay have two beautiful daughters, married to two handsome men, with three above-average grandchildren.
