weekly recap #106

hosted weekly by the book date

happy monday!

what i read this week

beautiful ugly by alice feeney

"A year later, Grady is still overcome with grief and desperate to know what happened to Abby. He can’t sleep, and he can’t write, so he travels to a tiny Scottish island to try to get his life back on track. Then he sees the impossible – a woman who looks exactly like his missing wife."

quick thoughts: ugh. one of this book's twists is something that annoys me to no end. and i totally saw it coming.

bravo by jessica ashley

"Their love is a risk neither can afford—but it might be the only thing worth fighting for."

quick thoughts: a quick and thrilling romantic suspense!

the fall risk by abby jimenez

"Two good neighbors make the best of a bad Valentine’s Day in a funny and improbably romantic short story by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Just for the Summer."

quick thoughts: super cute! i'm always excited a new romance from abby jimenez, even if it's short.

the golden goal by annah conwell

"Shaw Daniels is the bane of my existence."

quick thoughts: a cute frienemies-to-more sports romance is exactly what my brain needs in the middle of tax season.

heart of the glen by jennifer deibel

"Can the lonely thread of her life be woven into a new and finer pattern?"

quick thoughts: a cozy historical romance set in ireland!

last twilight in paris by pam jenoff

"A Parisian department store, a mysterious necklace and a woman’s quest to unlock a decade-old mystery are at the center of this riveting novel of love and survival, from New York Times bestselling author Pam Jenoff."

quick thoughts: this book highlights some interesting wwii history, while weaving together the heartbreaking stories of two women during and after the war. (thankfully, though, it's not quite as heartbreaking for these women as i expected.)

perfect fit by clare gilmore

"A hilarious and heartfelt rom-com about having it all, slowing down to see the big picture, and finding out that the person you least expect could be your perfect fit."

quick thoughts: i think my hopes were too high for this one. it's a fine contemporary romance, but it wasn't as standout as i wanted it to be.

the spellshop by sarah beth durst

"Join Kiela the librarian and her assistant, Caz the sentient spider plant, as they navigate the low stakes market of illegal spellmaking and the high risk business of starting over."

quick thoughts: a cute, cozy fantasy!

welcome to the hyunam-dong bookshop by hwang bo-reum

"Surrounded by friends, writers, and the books that bind them, Yeongju begins to write a new chapter in her life. The Hyunam-dong Bookshop evolves into a warm, welcoming haven for lost souls—a place to rest, heal, and remember that it’s never too late to scrap the plot and start over."

quick thoughts: i had heard a glowing review, so i was disappointed i was mostly just bored with this book.

what i'm reading now

the perfect putt by annah conwell

"Golf is for rich, pretentious jerks who need something to do while they gossip."

quick thoughts: the golden goal was just what i needed right now, so of course i'm continuing the more than a game series.

shattered sanctuary by nancy mehl

"Joined by the enigmatic Kaely Quinn-Hunter, a former FBI behavioral analyst, Erin not only embarks on a quest to stop the merciless serial killer, but also confronts the revived ghosts of her past. In a race against time, Erin must defeat her own demons while outmaneuvering a cunning killer or risk becoming the next victim in this deadly game of cat and mouse."

quick thoughts: i'm not too far in yet, but i'm expecting a highly readable mystery.

under the magnolias by t.i. lowe

"This night not only marked the end to the drought, but also the end to the long-held secret we’d kept hidden under the magnolias."

quick thoughts: i'm not sure i'm quite in the mood for this one, but i'm still trying...

what i hope to read this week

beg, borrow, or steal by sarah adams

"Emily accidentally sends an email to their school’s principal that could reveal her secret literary side hustle. She needs to steal back her manuscript, and Jack—she hates to admit—is just the man to help her. Surprisingly, he agrees. Will their unlikely alliance put an end to their rivalry? Or could it lead to a steamy plot twist they never saw coming?"

everything sad is untrue by daniel nayeri

"A sprawling, evocative, and groundbreaking autobiographical novel told in the unforgettable and hilarious voice of a young Iranian refugee. It is a powerfully layered novel that poses the questions: Who owns the truth? Who speaks it? Who believes it?"

first-time caller by b.k. borison

"Aiden Valentine has a secret: he’s fallen out of love with love. And as the host of Baltimore’s romance hotline, that’s a bit of a problem. But when a young girl calls in to the station asking for dating advice for her mom, the interview goes viral, thrusting Aiden and Heartstrings into the limelight."
