Rays of peach and gold fought to escape the clouds which held them prisoners, and in a few places, they were succeeding. Pacific waves rolled toward land, their cresting white caps softening into a translucent turquoise as they pounded the rocky shoreline. Water fowl flitted about on the rocks, making the monoliths look alive. Others floated atop the waves or combed the beach for food. Leonard pivoted, taking in next the thick, lush forest that made logging so successful in the region. Ancient pines towered from the mountaintops, their hefty limbs comparable to the girth of a workhorse. No matter how many times he saw it, the sight stole Leonard’s breath away, leaving him with a renewed sense of gratitude for the position he’d been granted. What a lighthouse keeper lacked in salary he made up for in the abundance of nourishment for his soul.
