EXCERPT

A gust of wind rustled the corner of a piece of fabric beside where the dog dug before lifting and twirling it toward them like tumbleweed rolling through an Old Western movie setting. The object caught on a group of weeds inches away from where Hazel stood.

Jackson’s superhero bandana.

“No!” Hazel dropped to her knees and buried her head in her hands.

Mitchell kneeled on one side of her, Bree on the other.

Their unified front to offer support.

Voices buzzed around her in a tunnel-like manner. Loud, but unrecognizable. Her father’s barked command for searchers to dig barely recorded in her brain. My baby is gone. Lord, why? Why? This couldn’t be happening.

She registered a hand resting on her back. Whispered words of comfort on both sides. She willed them away. Willed them not to be true. Her son was not dead. Words caught in her throat. She had to tell them to dig faster—she had to know—but her mind wouldn’t allow her to utter a sentence.

Duke ceased barking.

Smoke assaulted her nose, and she coughed.

Shouts sounded.

Fingers snapped in front of her face. “Hazel! Come out of it.” Her father’s growled words muffled nearby.

Someone grabbed her shoulders, shaking her, yelling at her. “It’s not Jackson!”

The words finally registered.

She shot to her feet as the scene before her came into focus and her ears cleared.

“Pumpkin, it’s a stuffed teddy bear,” her father said. “Not Jackson.”

Her father’s use of her nickname brought her out of the trance that had held her captive for an unknown amount of time. It had felt like an eternity.

Hazel’s hand flew to her mouth and tears of relief stumbled down her face. Thank You, God.

Mitchell brought her into an embrace.
