Thea shrugged. “Creating shawls and scarves is a pursuit of a purely domestic nature. I don’t see what all the fuss is about.”

“The fuss?” Her aunt’s voice rose. “Imagine what his lordship would think if he learned you stain silk in an outbuilding of all places! I still cannot believe Stanford gave you permission to use that ramshackle structure on his estate for your experiments. One would have thought he would be more sensible.”

“The duke is progressive in his thinking about female education.”

“Well, it is a mistake. Mark my words. Once a young girl becomes educated, she starts to wish for all sorts of things at odds with the womanly sphere of life.”

Her older relative shuffled her skirts noisily but, for once, did not reply. As the carriage rumbled home in the darkness, Thea smiled faintly. It wasn’t often she managed to stun her aunt into offended silence. She would enjoy the peace while it lasted.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Alissa Baxter wrote her first Regency romance during her long university holidays. After travelling the world, she settled down to write her second Regency novel, which was inspired by her time living on a country estate in England. Alissa then published two chick lit novels before returning to her favourite era with her Linfield Ladies Series, a trio of Regency romances that feature women in trend-setting roles who fall in love with men who embrace their trailblazing ways… at least eventually.
