Ryan shifted and glanced down the drive where Elsie stood beside his horse. Elsie stroked her fingers down Sundancer’s muzzle. The horse leaned into her touch as if already drawn to her. Ryan knew the feeling. He’d always been aware of Elsie. Too aware. And at all the wrong times. Like now for instance. When he was lingering for no apparent reason. When what he needed was to get back to his career. Back to the circuit. Where he belonged.

“You can look at my picture when you fall asleep. And dream about holding hands with Auntie Elsie.” Gemma twirled around in several circles, wobbled to a stop and speared her arms over her head. “Then you’ll wake up happy.”

A belt buckle. A jackpot. A perfect eight-second ride on a bucking bronc. That had been Ryan’s dream for as long as he could remember. Now certainly wasn’t the time to go looking for some new dream. Or worse someone. He was good as he was—riding through life solo. On his own terms.
