Two From Isaac's House by Normandie Fischer

About the Book
★★★★★
From author Normandie Fischer comes a new romantic suspense that takes the reader from the hills of Italy to the Jordanian desert and from there to an Israel on the brink of war with Hamas.

Rina Lynne has never traveled far from Morehead City, North Carolina. So when she inherits her father’s secret stash, she’s ready to kick up her heels and go adventuring before she settles down to marry her long-time fiancĂ©. First stop, Italy.

Enter Tony (aka Anton), an engineering geek conned into helping his Israeli cousins as a sort-of spy. From the moment he meets Rina, he’s distracted, which is not a good idea when there’s already been murder and theft. And from the moment Rina meets Tony, she’s fascinated, which is also not a good idea. He’s an Arab-American, and she’s half-Jewish. And engaged. And then there are all those bodies dropping around them, each linked to the gathering storm in the Middle East.

Though distinctly different from the first Normandie Fischer book I read (Heavy Weather), Two From Isaac’s House still similarly held my attention captive and engaged from start to finish, and I really enjoyed it. Fischer takes her readers to the Italian town of Perugia to begin her tale of romantic suspense and introduces American travelers, Rina and Tony. Having coincidentally crossed paths on more than one occasion, Rina and Tony find themselves as drawn to one another as they are to the string of murders and related crimes. The plot thickens, page after page, with plenty of drama and suspense, and I couldn’t stop reading until the very end. Two From Isaac’s House is a thoroughly fascinating read and will leave any fan of romantic suspense satisfied - I highly recommend it.

Thanks to TLC Book Tours, I received a copy of Two From Isaac’s House and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own. To read other opinions of the novel, click here.

About the Author
Normandie Fischer combines a love of all things Italian with a fascination for the cultures and cuisines of the Middle East, an interest fostered when she studied sculpture in Perugia and lived among Arab students. She and her husband retired from cruising Pacific Mexico on board their ketch, Sea Venture, to care for her aging mother, who now sails with them whenever the opportunity arises.

Two From Isaac's House is her first romantic suspense. She is better known for her women's fiction, including Becalmed (2013), Heavy Weather (2015), and Sailing Out of Darkness (2013).

The Heart of Revelation: Understanding the 10 Essential Themes of the Bible's Final Book by J. Scott Duvall

★★★★★
Goodreads | Amazon
The Vision of Hope in Revelation

Despite gallons of ink spilled and hours of movies made on the book of Revelation, it remains one of the most misunderstood books of Scripture. But Scott Duvall has good news for the discouraged reader--you don't have to figure out a complicated string of timelines and political theories to understand the heart of God's message to his people in Revelation.

Taking a thematic approach to Revelation, Duvall helps you focus on the vision of hope Revelation provides believers by exploring the biblical themes of God, worship, the people of God, the Holy Spirit, our mission, the Lamb of God, judgment, perseverance, and more, allowing you to understand and apply the message of Revelation--right here, right now.

If the last book of the Bible is still a mystery to you, or if your knowledge of it is limited to what you've read in novels or seen in movies, get ready for an eye-opening, faith-strengthening read.

The book of Revelation has always intrigued me, since people have found so many different ways to interpret it over the years. It can often seem confusing or scary when discussed, so I like to read about it when I have the chance (William Hendricksen’s More Than Conquerors from a couple months ago is one example) and eagerly took the opportunity to read J. Scott Duvall’s The Heart of Revelation: Understanding the 10 Essential Themes of the Bible’s Final Book. Duvall uses his book to highlight the encouraging themes woven throughout the book of Revelation and show its relevance for Christians today. I really enjoyed the perspective Duvall offers Revelation and highly recommend it. It’s another beneficial book for Christian readers.

On Lone Star Trail by Amanda Cabot

About the Book
★★★★★
A woman without a future. A man running from the past. One enchanting place where broken dreams are mended.

If there's one thing Gillian Hodge never wants to see again, it's a man on a motorcycle. Her last encounter with one left her right hand crushed, ending her promising career as a concert pianist. Unsure about the next phase in her life, she heads to Rainbow's End Resort for some R&R when a sudden thunderstorm causes a motorcycle to crash right in front of her.

When TJ Benjamin's wife died, he lost more than his best friend; he lost his faith. He has spent the past year wandering the country on his motorcycle, trying not to think about the future. When he finds himself stranded with a busted bike and a reluctant rescuer, he has to wonder about God's sense of humor.

As these broken people collide, they find that a bright future is still ahead-it just might not be the one they imagined for themselves.

On Lone Star Trail is the third novel in Amanda Cabot’s Texas Crossroads series, returning readers once again to the quaint Rainbow’s End Resort and its interesting characters. As its main characters, this novel introduces Gillian Hodge, friend of At Bluebonnet Lake’s Kate, and TJ Benjamin. Both Gillian and TJ arrive at Rainbow’s End carrying the burdens of past events that leave them uncertain of the future, but the more time they spend at the resort, the more they see the possibility and hope for the future - as long as they’re willing to embrace it. As Gillian and TJ gain new experiences and relationships, I really enjoyed following their story through the pages of On Lone Star Trail. It’s wholly entertaining and romantic and encouraging, and I think fans of the series will not want to miss it.

Thanks to Revell Reads, I received a copy of On Lone Star Trail and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

Goodreads | Amazon
In a desperate time, can Neva find forgiveness for a grievous wrong—and make room for hope?

Neva Shilling has a heavy load of responsibility while her husband travels to neighboring communities and sells items from his wagon. In his absence, she faithfully runs the Shilling Mercantile, working to keep their business strong as the Depression takes its toll, and caring for their twins.

When a wagon pulls up after supper, Neva and her children rush out—and into the presence of the deputy driving a wagon carrying three young children. The deputy shocks her with the news that Warren and his wife have died, insisting it was their last request that the three children go live with “Aunt Neva.”

Neva’s heart is shattered as she realizes that Warren’s month-long travels were excuses for visits with his secret family. She wants nothing more than to forget Warren, but can she abandon these innocent children to an orphanage? Yet if she takes them in, will she ever be able to see them as more than evidence of her husband’s betrayal and love them the way God does?

Pick up Kim Vogel Sawyer’s Room for Hope for an authentic and emotional trip to Depression-era Kansas. Fans of historical fiction will not regret it.

Neva Shilling discovers, in one conversation, her husband’s death, infidelity, and three orphaned children, and her life changes dramatically. The aftermath of this devastating discovery brings a persistent struggle with a wide array of feelings - anger, betrayal, bitterness, doubt - to Neva and the family surrounding her. Yet, through it all, a reliance on faith, hope, and love permeates and encourages.

From start to finish, Room for Hope is a touching and heartfelt story. With well-developed characters and realistic challenges, it kept me eager to see how the story would unfold. I absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it to interested readers.

Roots & Sky: A Journey Home in Four Seasons by Christie Purifoy

About the Book
★★★★★
"This is not a book. This is a sanctuary. Step inside and breathe again." -Jennifer Dukes Lee, author of Love Idol

When Christie Purifoy arrived at Maplehurst that September, she was longing for a fixed point in her busily spinning world. The sprawling Victorian farmhouse sitting atop a Pennsylvania hill held within its walls endless possibilities. It was a place where she could finally grasp and hold the thing we all long for - home.

In lyrical, contemplative prose, Christie slowly unveils the trials and triumphs of that first year at Maplehurst - from summer's intense heat and autumn's glorious canopy to winter's quiet grief and spring's unexpected mercies. Through stories of planting and preserving, of opening the gates wide to neighbors, and of learning to speak the language of a place, Christie invites you into the heartache and joy of small beginnings and the wonder of a God who would make his home with us.

Roots & Sky: A Journey Home in Four Seasons is a beautiful read. Christie Purifoy shares the experience of her first year at Maplehurst and dwells thoughtfully on the ideas of home, faith, and ordinary days. As I read, I could not help being drawn in by Purifoy’s lyrical language and captivating storytelling and felt compelled to just keep reading page after page. Well-written and engaging, Roots & Sky lingers long after the reading of the last page. I loved it and now highly recommend it.

The Goodbye Bride by Denise Hunter

★★★★★
She only remembers loving him. But he can’t forget the way she left.

Following a concussion, Lucy Lovett can’t remember the last seven months of her life. She doesn’t remember leaving her fiancĂ© Zac Callahan weeks before their wedding or moving to Portland, Maine. And she sure doesn’t remember getting engaged to another man. All she remembers is loving Zac more than life itself.

It’s taken Zac months to move on after Lucy left him with no explanation. He’s thrown himself into his family’s farm and his restaurant business in Summer Harbor. Now Lucy’s back, vulnerable, homeless, and still in love with him. She needs his help putting the pieces together, but letting her back into his life is a risk—and the stakes are high. If he follows his heart he’ll win back the love of his life. But if her memory returns he’ll lose her all over again.

Well, Denise Hunter knows how to write a swoon-worthy romance, and her newest novel easily exemplifies exactly that. With a return to both the charming town of Summer Harbor, Maine and the highly appealing Callahan brothers, The Goodbye Bride will not leave lovers of romance disappointed.

Heartbroken Zac Callahan, the younger brother of Falling Like Snowflakes’ Beau, has spent months trying to recover from the unexpected and painful departure of his fiancee Lucy Lovett, but an amnesia-inducing accident threatens to undo all his forward progress. Since Lucy cannot remember making the decision to leave Zac so suddenly, she wants a chance to regain his affections - but he refuses to get hurt again. Their story then unfolds with compelling conflict, chemistry, and character development and captured my attention, imagination, and emotions until the very satisfying end.

Entirely engrossing and delightful, The Goodbye Bride is a top-notch read, and I loved every moment in this second trip to Summer Harbor. With ease and certainty, I recommend it to fans of contemporary romance, while impatiently look forward to reading the third Callahan brother’s story, Just a Kiss.

A Sweet Misfortune by Maggie Brendan

About the Book
★★★★★
Rachel Matthews isn't one to rely on others to take care of her. Homeless and alone, she still wants to make her own way and her own money to buy back the family ranch-even if she's forced into the life of a dance hall girl. Horrified by her circumstances, Rachel's brother, who is away mining for gold, sends a friend to rescue her.

Cattle baron John McIntyre is focused on acquiring as much land as possible in Montana and has little time to deal with a dance hall gal. Rachel isn't sure she can take one more day in John's home-especially once she discovers that he's the one who holds ransom the key to her family's future.

Sparks fly between this spunky, independent heroine and the ruggedly handsome hero as they navigate the snarled terrain of pride, greed, faith, and love in Maggie Brendan's delightful series set in the Old West.

The second in Maggie Brendan’s Vices and Virtues of the Old West series, A Sweet Misfortune offers a story as equally delightful as The Trouble With Patience. Against a great western setting, Brendan introduces stubborn main characters (who need a few lessons on pride) and sets them up for entertaining interactions and complications. From start to finish, I highly enjoyed this quick, lighthearted read. Fans of historical romance will not want to miss A Sweet Misfortune.

The Prophetess by Jill Eileen Smith

About the Book
★★★★★
Canaan has ravaged Israel. The people are in hiding. All that stands between surrender and hope is one untested woman.

Deborah will never forget the day her father and brothers left to worship at the Lord's tabernacle--or the wails of her mother after finding their bodies at the city gates. The memories of Canaan's cruelty haunt her and all of Israel. Now in this dark time, the Lord calls on Deborah to lead His people away from the idols of other nations and back to Him.

Deborah never asked to be a prophetess or a judge over God's people. Still, she cannot deny His voice or the visions that accompany it. Can her family ever understand? Will her people believe God's calling on her life? And can the Canaanite menace be stopped?

With her trademark impeccable research and imaginative storytelling, Jill Eileen Smith brings to life the story of Israel's most powerful woman in this intriguing and inspiring novel.

This second Daughters of the Promised Land novel takes a look into the life of another well-known, biblical woman: Deborah. In a time when the Canaanites relentlessly terrorized the Israelites, the assertive, outspoken, and intelligent Deborah becomes the prophetess Israel desperately need to bring them into the life God wants for His people. Her story contains controversy, conflict, and challenges within a detailed historical context and a cast of interesting characters, and I really loved how Jill Eileen Smith brings it to life. Fans of biblical fiction will not want to miss The Prophetess - I would recommend it and now can’t wait to read more from Smith in the future.

Kissed by a Cowboy by Debra Clopton

About the Book
★★★★★
Cassidy was looking for a home and a place to belong... not for a cowboy to steal her heart.

Having lived through her parents' endless string of "matrimonial bliss gone wrong," Cassidy Starr knows when the odds are not in her favor. Divorced and humiliated, her faith on rocky ground, Cassidy is through with love. She's been bucked off that horse far too many times. Instead, she returns to Wishing Springs, Texas, and the rundown farm she's inherited from her great aunt Roxie. She'll reopen the strawberry farm and a bed & breakfast and follow in her aunt's footsteps, remaining forever-independent, happy... and single.

Rancher Jarrod Monahan's hands are full running the ranch, looking after his ailing grandfather, and chasing down a group of rustlers on the loose. He's pushed his longing for a family to the bottom of his list of priorities. Besides, he was in love once but ran scared and lost his shot at happiness. But suddenly, the biggest regret of his life has moved in next door with a wounded heart, determined to become a spinster... and that's a challenge that Jarrod can't pass up.

Jarrod sets his mind to breaking down the walls around Cassidy's stubborn heart. How can he show her that a cowboy's kiss lasts forever? For the good folks of Wishing Springs, falling in love has never been so much fun to witness.

With just its title, Debra Clopton’s Kissed by a Cowboy seems to promise all the romance I enjoyed in the previous Four of Hearts Ranch novels. So, I started reading it with high expectations, and luckily, I did not stop disappointed, as the eldest Monahan brother gets his chance for love finally.

Entirely serious, focused, and committed to running his family’s ranch successfully, Jarrod does not have time to consider his love life - until a woman from his past, Cassidy Starr, moves into the next-door house, and their attraction is immediate, mutual, and undeniable. Unfortunately, stubborn Cassidy has decide to remain single and independent in the wake of her humiliating divorce. Just as stubbornly, though, Jarrod quickly determines he needs to change her mind.

As comedic scenarios, emotional hurts, and the meddlesome matchmakers of Wishing Springs bring Jarrod and Cassidy together again and again, Kissed by a Cowboy tells an entertaining and heartwarming romance. I really enjoyed it, and I believe fans of contemporary romance, especially those who have read the other Four of Hearts Ranch novels, will, too. I recommend it.

Behold the Man by Bodie & Brock Thoene

★★★★★
Behold the Man is the culmination of the Jerusalem Chronicles and brings readers to an encounter with the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.

How could Jesus—who preached righteousness before God, and love and mercy toward neighbors—be so hated and pursued? To the Temple officials, he was a threat to the livelihood and authority of the priesthood. To Herod Antipas, he was a threat to his ambition to be the King of the Jews. And to the Roman overlords, he was seen as a dangerous threat; a man who commanded an army of the common people. He could heal wounds, offer miraculous provisions, and even raise from the dead. If Jesus had accepted popular acclaim and become an earthly king, he would have been unstoppable.

Jesus’s last days are explored through three people who interacted with him: Governor Pilate, for whom Judea will either make or break his career; Pilate’s wife, Claudia, desperately seeking aid for her much loved, crippled son; and Centurion Marcus Longinus, caught in the middle between loyalty to the Empire, love for Claudia, and an ever-increasing belief in Jesus as the Son of God. After encountering Jesus, none of them will ever be the same.

As can be expected, the Thoenes once again tell a fascinating historical tale that will not leave their readers disappointed. This latest novel, Behold the Man, continues the Jerusalem Chronicles (following When Jesus Wept and Take This Cup) and offers an interesting look at the times surrounding the ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Characters, including Pontius Pilate, his wife Claudia, and Roman centurion Marcus Longinus, lend their points of view to the storyline and bring familiar events to life with intriguing detail and fresh perspective. I highly enjoyed Behold the Man, since I just couldn't put it down, and would certainly recommend it to fans of historical fiction - especially this time of year, with Easter not too far away. It’s a great, inspiring read.

Thanks to BookLook Bloggers, I received a copy of Behold the Man and the opportunity to honestly review it. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own. The Good Liar by Nicholas Searle

About the Book
★★★★
This is a life told back to front.

This is a man who has lied all his life.

Roy is a conman living in a small English town, about to pull off his final con. He is going to meet and woo a beautiful woman and slip away with her life savings. But who is the man behind the con?

What has he had to do to survive a life of lies?

And who has had to pay the price?

Nicholas Searle’s debut novel, The Good Liar, quite an interesting and well-constructed read. He builds a fascinating cast of characters, as Roy attempts his final con on Betty and discovers it may not go as well as initially anticipated, and I couldn’t put this book down as I followed along with them. Searle winds his narrative through twists and turns with intriguing flashbacks into Roy’s past, showing the past that brought him to the current moment. Overall, I can easily say that The Good Liar is a thrilling read and will not leave interested readers disappointed.

The Quality of Silence by Rosamund Lupton

★★★★★
Goodreads | Amazon
The gripping, moving story of a mother and daughter's quest to uncover a dark secret in the Alaskan wilderness, from the New York Times bestselling author of Sister and Afterwards.

Thrillingly suspenseful and atmospheric, The Quality of Silence is the story of Yasmin, a beautiful astrophysicist, and her precocious deaf daughter, Ruby, who arrive in a remote part of Alaska to be told that Ruby's father, Matt, has been the victim of a catastrophic accident. Unable to accept his death as truth, Yasmin and Ruby set out into the hostile winter of the Alaskan tundra in search of answers. But as a storm closes in, Yasmin realizes that a very human danger may be keeping pace with them. And with no one else on the road to help, they must keep moving, alone and terrified, through an endless Alaskan night.

I picked up Rosamund Lupton’s The Quality of Silence because the premise intrigued me - especially since it takes place in Alaska, and Alaska’s wilderness has always fascinated me. I’m pleased to say that it did not leave me disappointed. It’s a thrilling and suspenseful read as the mother-and-daughter pair trek across the bleak Alaskan landscape, and Lupton’s great writing brings their setting to life with rich and vivid detail - I just loved it. The Quality of Silence is easily an interesting and engaging book that will keep its readers turning pages as quickly as I did, and I would recommend it to interested readers.
