EXCERPT
From under her lashes, she caught Adam’s gaze directed into her skull. Until she determined how to solve the complicated problem she engineered, she vowed to avoid provocation. Why on earth had she claimed amnesia? What details was she allowed to know? Was this sweater still her favorite? Had she purchased the cardigan after regaining consciousness from the supposed fall or from the vague time before she met Adam?
If she called Steph, they would talk, laugh, and find a solution together. Caitlyn grabbed the breadbasket and stuffed a roll in her mouth. She needed her sister. At the exorbitant rate per minute, she couldn’t use the stateroom phone again unless she faced an emergency. Until she could find a replacement cell phone, however, she would have to determine the best course without any help. She swallowed her extra-large bite of buttery roll and dabbed her mouth with the napkin.
When she darted her gaze in his direction, she noted his hunched posture resembled a deflated car dealer balloon. A few hours earlier, “his loud sighs echoed frustrated displeasure throughout the tiny cabin and past the curtain dividing the room. During the muster drill, she declared two in their party. As the crewmember nodded and checked something on his clipboard, Adam shot her a withering glare. If she wanted peace in their roommate situation, she resolved to bear his annoyance. The least she could do was appeal to the kind man she knew and strike up a civil conversation. “Did you say you were married?”
He choked on a gulp of water. Pressing a fist to his mouth, he coughed twice, took another sip, and nodded. “Yes, I’m married.”
“You said we broke up recently?” She rested her chin in a palm and cocked her head to the side. If he learned the truth, her questions wouldn’t earn her any reprieve. Her curiosity was too piqued, however, to resist.
