The Friday 56 & First Line Friday | A Touch of Gold

The Friday 56 is hosted weekly by Freda's Voice.
First Line Friday is hosted weekly by Hoarding Books.

Happy Friday!

I have a lot of books I'm looking forward to reading, and this fantasy-adventure from Annie Sullivan is one of them. Enjoy the peek!

First Line: Once upon a time, a little girl helplessly watched as liquid gold spun a web across her tiny frame, racing to wrap her up in an icy cocoon.

From Page 56: I want to run along naming every part of the ship I know, explore the lower decks, and stand at the helm and pretend I'm leading the ship out of the harbor.

ABOUT THE BOOK
King Midas once had the ability to turn all he touched into gold. But after his gift—or curse—almost killed his daughter, Midas relinquished The Touch forever. Ten years later, Princess Kora still bears the consequences of her father’s wish: her skin shines golden, rumors follow her everywhere she goes, and she harbors secret powers that are getting harder to hide.

Kora spends her days locked in the palace, concealed behind gloves and veils, trying to ignore the stares and gossip of courtiers. It isn’t until a charming young duke arrives that Kora realizes there may be someone out there who doesn’t fear her or her curse. But their courtship is disrupted when a thief steals precious items from the kingdom, leaving the treasury depleted and King Midas vulnerable. Thanks to her unique ability to sense gold, Kora is the only one who can track the thief down. As she sails off on her quest, Kora learns that not everything is what it seems—not thieves, not pirates, and not even curses. She quickly discovers that gold—and the power it brings—is more dangerous than she’d ever believed.

Midas learned his lesson at a price. What will Kora’s journey cost?

Now, feel free to leave a line from a book near you in the comments below.
And be sure to stop by Hoarding Books and Freda's Voice for a peek into other books.

  1. Happy Friday! My first line is from Dancing in the Rain by Eileen Rife and Jennifer Slattery:

“The letter was probably one more rejection Loni could add to all the others crumpled in her trash.”

  2. Great first line! Thanks for sharing this book. I have not heard of it. Here's the first line from a book on my TBR shelf, Justice Buried by Patricia Bradley -- It wasn't too hot for 10:00 P.M. in the middle of May unless you were about to climb over the ledge of a fourteen-story building in downtown Memphis.

    Happy Friday!

  3. Oh! I have this to read next! Thanks for sharing it. Today I shared the first couple of lines from Fiona Davis' upcoming book "The Masterpiece" on my blog. But as I'm only about 25% into the book, let me share the first few lines of the chapter I'm currently reading.

"Clara had seen Levon only twice since he'd taken her class five days earlier: once in a crowded hallway, where he'd given her a salute as he brushed by, and another time on the concourse of the terminal, where she was certain he'd spotted her but pretended not to.
His puerile behavior annoyed her. She had no way of knowing if he'd upheld his end of the bet and insisted that Mr. Lorette keep her on."

I hope you enjoy that. Happy weekend and enjoying your reading! :D

  4. Happy Friday!😊

My first line comes from The Mending by Susan Lantz Simpson……..

She sensed someone had entered the room, even though she’d been dozing and hadn’t heard the whoosh of the door opening or the squeak of athletic shoes on the tile floor. Her eyes felt glued shut.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!😊📚

  5. Happy Friday! Over on my blog, I'm sharing the first line from The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond by Jaime Jo Wright. Here I'll share the first line from Chapter 28 of the same book:
"Dusk had settled over Gossamer Pond. The mist rolled off its surface, making the mossy green algae glow in the moonlight."
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Hope you have a great weekend! 😀

  9. On my blog, I'm sharing the first line from Secrets & Charades by Cindy Ervin Huff. Since I'm still reading the book, I will share the first two lines from chapter 8 here. "Jake finished hitching the wagon as the sun rose over the horizon. When he peered in the door of the soddie, Evangeline stood before him trying to press the wrinkles out of her green dress with her hands." Have a wonderful weekend!

  10. Happy Friday! I'm sharing from a different book on my blog today, but my current lunchtime read is the second Lady Alkmene Cozy Mystery, Diamonds of Death by Vivian Conroy. Here are the first lines:

"It was madness to do this on a night with a full moon. But then you had to be a little mad to do this work to begin with."

  11. The book I shared on my blog today is A Rumored Fortune by Joanna Davidson Politano but it's also the book I'm currently reading so I'll share the first line from chapter 3 here: "Squinting into the fog made orange by the rising sun, I strode through the sprawling vineyard in a nightdress and my tattered old garden cloak and pondered the odd whispers of my servant." Hope you have a great weekend with lots of reading time! :)

Today’s first lines come from Dangerous Deeds: The Westport Mysteries. Lizzie by Beth Prentice.
