The start to Susan Forest’s Addicted to Heaven series, Bursts of Fire follows three sisters—Meg, Janat, and Rennika—in the midst of escaping political upheaval, while learning to both control magic and survive on their own. As they do so, the story that unfolds around them is an epic fantasy, full of rich worldbuilding, plenty of danger and intrigue, and a touch of reality in its exploration of addiction and mental health. Each of the sisters has her own unique personality, adding another interesting layer to the story as it becomes more evident who they are and how they change.

I will admit that Bursts of Fire starts slow. It takes a few chapters for Forest to establish the world around the sisters, which I completely understand. But then, when the story does pick up, I was captivated. The story may not be entirely original, as far as YA fantasy goes, but I still stayed interested until the end. I am very much ready to see what’s next for the series. In the meantime, readers of YA fantasy, add Bursts of Fire to your TBR!
