A Most Inconvenient Love | Excerpt + Giveaway

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sober businessman Seb Ward may have come from a wealthy lumber-baron family in Minnesota, but he knows that appearances can be deceiving, and that his illustrious family is pretty dysfunctional. Being in another state has provided the buffer he sought from his father’s misdeeds, but when a little boy shows up on a train… a little boy who looks enough like Seb to be his own child… Seb’s faced with a dilemma. Raise the boy as his own, or let his mother suffer the embarrassment of “a brother by another mother.” And when the boy takes a shine to the Rachel Eichas, the newly contracted school teacher, Seb can’t help but do the same.

But Rachel was raised by an unloving, business-first father and there’s no way she’s looking for those same qualities in a husband. Can she see through Seb’s focus and drive to find the loving man within?

EXCERPT

Seb’s next thought sprang to his father’s long list of indiscretions. Were there more children out there?

His temples throbbed at the thought. His mother, such a good, caring woman, always ready to help others. Did she suspect his infidelity? Did she care? Or had Cedric used up her sympathy over the years?

He looked up as they reached the corner. He paused, drinking in the sight before him. Rachel Eichas was talking to Nellie outside her brother’s wagon shop.

Simple beauty.

Nellie’s good looks flashed with her quick moves, her blond hair and bright dresses.

Rachel’s beauty shone in its more demure fashion, like the morning star. Not “notice-me” sharp, but warm and enticing. Peaceful.

She caught sight of him, watching her.

Fingers, long and tapering, went to her throat, as if unnerved.

She swallowed, and when Nellie followed the direction of her gaze, she smiled wide, as if surmising.

But there was nothing to surmise or expect. He knew that. He understood what wasn’t said. He’d set a name for himself in this town, he’d kept himself apart with grave intent, and the image he’d put forth was done with purpose. A businessman couldn’t be successful and easy-going. If he was, he didn’t stay in business long, especially in the cut-throat business of lumber these days. Tens of millions of board feet of lumber came out of Minnesota, with thousands of loggers cutting year-round. It was a business enjoying a huge upswing, but that upward arc of the pendulum wouldn’t last forever. Rising trends never did, and Seb had to be prepared for not only the seasonal rise and fall in sales, but the annual fluctuations. And now, a boy that looked just like him, added into the mix.

  4. I understand what Seb was thinking. My dad didn't contact us for 20 years, and I often wondered if I had siblings that I didn't know about.
