We are sisters, a beautiful mosaic united by the love of God through the blood of Christ. We have experienced the redemptive, restorative power of God’s grace in our marriages and families, and we believe our God is able to heal, restore and redeem our brokenness. His love fills us with the courage to persevere, and to offer others a Christ-like compassion that is full of His wisdom and grace.

When my nephew was thirteen, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. It was during his treatments at the hospital that I was introduced to child life specialists. While many members of the medical team focused on my nephew’s treatment, these team members were concerned about him, his understanding, and his experience. They visited his school to explain the cancer to his classmates and answer their questions. They taught my nephew about the procedures, and they came in and played games with him. In a difficult time, they were a bright spot in the day.

I found this relatively new career fascinating. I imagined how it would be both difficult and rewarding to work with children who were seriously ill, and I knew this was something I could build a story around.

My character is quirky and fun, but has a serious side as well. She understands trauma in a personal way and is a champion for “her” kids.

Today, my nephew is finishing up a second round of chemo, and the child life specialists have remained a part of his care team. It’s good to know there is someone there who will take extra time to explain and listen to all aspects of keeping life as normal as possible for a now fifteen-year-old young man.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fan favorite Lorna Seilstad writes multi-layered stories which contain a generous dash of humor. She is the author of the Lake Manawa Summers series and Gregory Sisters series (Revell) and has stories included several novella collections. She was a Carol Award finalist in historical romance, but today writes both historical and contemporary stories. When she’s not eating chocolate, she enjoys doing flowers for weddings, teaching Bible classes, researching history, baking cookies, and working with her 4-H club. She and her husband live in Iowa with their three adult children living nearby.
